Yes—the reported design pairs an existing Samsung Galaxy S10 with a compact Bluetooth keyboard and a modified mini tackle box to make a portable workstation. The “under $100” figure is a reported target, not a verified current total, and no published test establishes that the finished case is waterproof. Treat it as a DIY concept for reusing a phone, not a guaranteed low-cost or submersion-safe build.

How the Galaxy S10 cyberdeck is meant to work

The phone supplies the computing hardware; the case and keyboard make it easier to carry and use. Secondary build accounts describe placing a Galaxy S10 and a Bluetooth keyboard with an integrated trackpad inside a modified mini tackle box. The reports describe the enclosure as sealed or weatherproof, but do not identify its make, dimensions, or ingress-protection rating. (Build report; Build coverage)

This is a phone-centered project, not a single-board-computer build. The reports mention an S10 configuration with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, but Galaxy S10 configurations vary by market and model. Check the exact handset rather than assuming those specifications apply to every S10.

Can the build really cost less than $100?

The secondary reports present under $100 as an achievable project budget and suggest that a used S10 may be available for less than $70. They do not provide a dated, itemized bill of materials for the exact build, and those figures are not verified current market prices. If you already own a suitable phone, your out-of-pocket cost may be different from someone who needs to buy one; case and keyboard prices also depend on the models you choose.

What you need to choose and check

Galaxy S10

Start with a working handset and confirm its model, condition, storage, and battery health. The concept reuses the phone rather than adding a separate computer and display. The reports do not establish an exact charging arrangement, so plan how you will charge the phone without assuming the case provides an external charging port.

Small tackle box

Look for a compact case with enough interior room for the phone and keyboard, plus any clearance needed to place or remove them comfortably. Compare interior dimensions, latch and seal design, durability, and carry features. The featured reports do not name a case model or provide measurements, so measure your chosen components and the case interior before committing to a fit.

Bluetooth keyboard with trackpad

The reports call for a compact keyboard with an integrated trackpad but do not verify a specific model or size. Check that the keyboard supports Bluetooth, that its layout suits your typing, and that it fits inside the enclosure. Consider whether the trackpad and keyboard can be used comfortably with the case open.

Optional additions

A larger battery beneath the keyboard and a detachable kickstand are described as possible refinements, not required parts of the reported base design. They take up space and may change how the components fit, so include them in your measurements before buying a case.

Is a modified tackle box actually weatherproof?

Not on the available evidence. The secondary accounts use “waterproof” or “weatherproof” to describe the case concept, but provide no formal rating, model, test conditions, or submersion results for the assembled device. A case that closes against splashes is not automatically a waterproof cyberdeck, and the phone, keyboard, seams, and any openings all affect the finished assembly.

Cutting or mounting parts can also compromise an enclosure. In a separate project, a maker reports that their modified Pelican case “does not maintain the Pelican case’s original waterproof rating.” That is a disclosure about that maker’s build, not a universal test result, but it is a sound reason not to assume a case retains its protection after modification. If you need a device for rain or a canoe trip, verify the rating and test conditions for the specific unmodified case, then account for every change made to it. Do not rely on the word “weatherproof” alone, and do not expose an untested build to water as though it were submersion-safe.

How to plan the build without guessing at fit

  1. Measure the actual components. Record the phone and keyboard dimensions, including any added battery or stand, then compare them with the case’s usable interior space.
  2. Choose the enclosure around the intended use. Inspect its latches, seals, and carry features, and look for a stated ingress rating if water resistance matters.
  3. Decide how you will operate and charge it. Check that you can reach the phone and keyboard when the case is open. The reported build accounts do not establish a particular charging setup or an externally accessible control layout.
  4. Be cautious before altering the case. The reports mention using a Dremel, while another account describes avoiding external openings for charging or buttons. These descriptions do not establish one verified construction procedure. Any cut, mount, or port can affect protection; consult the case maker’s guidance and do not assume the original rating still applies.
  5. Assemble and check the fit before relying on it. Make sure components sit securely and can be removed or operated as intended. A fit check does not establish water resistance.

Should you use a Galaxy S10 or build around a Raspberry Pi?

A Raspberry Pi is a separate project path, not a drop-in replacement for the phone. It changes the computing hardware, power planning, and potentially the need for a separate display and additional assembly. The phone approach is most straightforward when you already have a suitable S10 and want to reuse it; the Pi route makes more sense when its hardware and software fit your goals and you are prepared to plan its peripherals and power separately.

Choice What it brings What to plan for
Galaxy S10 Reuses a phone as the computing core; the reported design pairs it with a Bluetooth keyboard and compact case. Exact handset configuration, case and keyboard fit, charging arrangement, and current parts cost are not established by the reports. (Build report; Build coverage)
Raspberry Pi A small-computer alternative that can be adapted to a case-based cyberdeck. Plan the board, display, peripherals, power supply, and assembly as a distinct build. Raspberry Pi’s power examples below apply to Pi hardware, not the S10. (Raspberry Pi cyberdeck guide; Pi project parts list)

Power planning for a Raspberry Pi variant

Do not apply Raspberry Pi power figures to the phone-based build. For a Pi project, Raspberry Pi Ltd advises adding the power needs of the computer, peripherals, and accessories using their datasheets or manuals. Its cyberdeck guide gives a Raspberry Pi 5 example of 25 W at 5 V/5 A under worst-case, fully loaded USB conditions, and approximately 3 W for a Touch Display 2 at full brightness. Under those assumptions, the example totals roughly 28 W, or 5.6 A at 5 V. These are guide figures for that Pi setup, not measurements of a Galaxy S10 build. (Raspberry Pi cyberdeck guide)

The guide lists a power bank among possible supplies and warns that LiPo batteries require careful handling and charging. It advises avoiding over-discharge and ideally fusing near the battery while monitoring cell voltage. Choose a supply for the complete Pi system rather than sizing it from the board alone.

What the official case advice does—and does not—mean

Raspberry Pi’s cyberdeck guide says, “A good starting case is a Pelican-style hard case,” describing such cases as robust, normally fitted with a carry handle, and weatherproof. That is general enclosure advice from the guide; it does not certify the modified tackle-box build or guarantee that modifications preserve a case’s rating. (Raspberry Pi cyberdeck guide)

The practical choice is an enclosure that fits your components and whose protection claims match your intended conditions. A small waterproof tackle box is a category to compare, not a verified model or assurance that the finished device is waterproof.

Quick Recap

What is not established about this particular build

  • The exact tackle-box and keyboard models, their dimensions, and a measured component fit.
  • A current itemized cost or guaranteed sub-$100 shopping total.
  • A verified charging arrangement, water-ingress test, or formal rating for the assembled cyberdeck.
