Sometimes. A laptop may have removable SO-DIMM slots, memory soldered to the motherboard, or a mix of both. Whether you can add RAM depends on the exact configuration—not just the laptop’s product-family name. Check its manufacturer specifications and service manual before buying memory.
How to tell whether your laptop’s RAM is upgradeable
- Identify the exact laptop. Find its full model number, machine type, product number, or SKU on the laptop, in system information, or through the manufacturer’s support page.
- Check the matching manufacturer specifications. Look for the memory type, number of slots, supported capacity, and whether memory is listed as onboard, soldered, socketed, or a combination.
- Find the service or maintenance manual for that exact model. Check for a memory replacement procedure, supported module details, capacity limits, and instructions such as disconnecting the battery before opening the case. Lenovo’s support guidance points users to model specifications, user guides, and hardware maintenance manuals when checking memory support.
- Resolve discrepancies with the manufacturer. Task Manager slot counts, retailer listings, and third-party configurators can be useful clues, but shouldn’t override exact-model documentation. Acer’s guidance also recommends checking the model specifications and service manual and notes that some laptops combine soldered and socketed memory. If the documents are unclear, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider using the complete model identifier.
What soldered, socketed, and hybrid memory mean
Socketed RAM
A socketed SO-DIMM is a removable memory module. It may be possible to replace or expand it, but only if the laptop has an accessible compatible socket and supports the intended module and capacity. Crucial’s installation guide explains that the owner’s manual identifies the expansion-slot location and shows how a SO-DIMM fits into its slot.
Soldered RAM
Soldered memory is attached directly to the system board rather than installed as a removable stick. It is not a standard consumer RAM upgrade: the installed capacity is generally fixed for that configuration.
Hybrid memory
Some laptops have both soldered memory and one or more SO-DIMM slots. In that case, you may be able to upgrade only the socketed portion. The exact manual and specifications determine whether a slot exists and the supported total capacity; the presence of soldered memory does not, by itself, rule out an upgrade.

What to check before buying laptop RAM
Once the documentation confirms an upgrade path, compare the candidate module with the laptop’s specifications. Verify each of these details:
- Whether a usable slot is available, including any module already occupying it.
- Form factor, such as SO-DIMM, and memory generation, such as DDR4.
- Supported voltage and speed.
- Maximum capacity per slot and maximum supported total capacity.
A vendor compatibility selector can help find candidate modules by laptop make and model, but cross-check its results against the laptop’s own specification and service guide. Crucial provides a compatibility lookup for this purpose.

- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select DDR4 SODIMM capable Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) computer systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
For example, Crucial lists the CT16G4SFRA32A as a 16GB DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM rated at 1.2V. Those are the listed product specifications, not proof that it fits an unspecified laptop. Don’t choose a module based on capacity or a family name alone.

Can you add a second RAM stick if some memory is soldered?
Possibly. A hybrid laptop may have an open SO-DIMM slot alongside soldered memory, or its socket may already be occupied. Check the exact model’s service manual and supported-capacity information to confirm the slot count, whether a slot is available, and what module the laptop supports.

What if the laptop has no removable slot?
If the exact model documentation shows only soldered memory and no replaceable memory module, there is no standard SO-DIMM upgrade to install. For a laptop you have not bought yet, compare memory layout, out-of-box capacity, maximum supported capacity, slot count and accessibility, and whether the manufacturer documents a service procedure. A socketed design can allow a later change within its documented limits; soldered-only memory fixes the capacity at purchase.

Opening a laptop and accessing memory varies by device. Use the exact service instructions rather than treating a general installation guide as a disassembly procedure. Buy a precision screwdriver only if the manual calls for opening the case and the tool matches its fasteners.
