Not universally. ReShade can apply post-processing effects to older games, but installing it does not add NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution to a game that was never built to provide the data and integration DLSS requires. Some middleware can replace an upscaler in compatible games; that is different from creating upscaler support from scratch.
Why ReShade cannot simply turn on DLSS
ReShade is a post-processing framework that supports multiple graphics APIs and lets shaders and add-ons modify rendered output. Its add-on API, introduced in ReShade 5.0, extends what developers can build, but it does not mean a universal DLSS add-on exists. ReShade’s official information is at reshade.me.
DLSS Super Resolution is not simply a resize-and-sharpen filter applied to a finished screenshot. It is integrated into a game or application and uses rendering inputs provided by that software. NVIDIA’s DLSS Programming Guide, dated March 31, 2026, describes the process as integrating DLSS into a game or application with the DLSS SDK. As a result, a generic post-processing tool cannot recreate the missing game-side integration merely by being injected.
That distinction matters when comparing “DLSS-style” effects. A spatial scaler can enlarge a lower-resolution image, and sharpening can make edges look crisper. Those operations may change appearance, but they are not equivalent to DLSS’s game-integrated temporal upscaling. Do not assume an effect advertised as an upscaler will offer DLSS-quality reconstruction or a specific performance gain.

What can work instead
Use a game’s existing upscaler path
If a game already supports DLSS, FSR 2 or later, or XeSS, middleware such as OptiScaler may let you replace one supported upscaler with another. This is conditional on the game and its implementation, not a universal method for adding upscaling to any title. Check OptiScaler’s documentation and game-specific compatibility information for the exact game and version before following installation instructions.
Check for a game-specific mod
A game without an existing upscaler path would need a game-specific mod or other integration that supplies the necessary inputs. The available general-purpose ReShade and middleware guidance does not establish a universal method for doing this. Verify that a mod exists for the named game, and consult its current requirements and compatibility reports; do not treat support for another game as evidence that yours will work.

Use ReShade for post-processing, not missing DLSS support
ReShade may still be useful for supported post-processing effects in an older game. Its official site documents supported APIs and installation information. Whether ReShade can attach depends on the game’s rendering API and setup; that question is separate from whether DLSS can be added.
Check the game before installing anything
- Identify the game and version. Look for an official graphics setting or reliable game-specific documentation showing whether it supports DLSS, FSR, or XeSS. If it does, note the supported version and check middleware compatibility for that exact game.
- Find the rendering API. Check the game’s documentation or configuration information to determine whether it uses an API ReShade supports directly. ReShade’s official site is the starting point for its current support and installation guidance.
- If the API is legacy, check only the relevant wrapper route. ReShade’s troubleshooting guidance mentions d3d8to9 for DirectX 8 and DXGL or dgVoodoo2 for certain older APIs. These wrappers translate graphics APIs so compatibility layers may attach; they do not create DLSS or provide missing motion and depth inputs. They can also introduce technical or visual problems.
- For an existing upscaler path, check compatibility before replacing it. Review OptiScaler’s current game entry and instructions rather than applying a generic setup. Compatibility is game-specific, and a working route in one title does not establish support in another.
- For online games, check the rules before injecting software. OptiScaler warns that it may trigger anti-cheat and lead to bans. If the game’s policy or anti-cheat status is unclear, do not use an injector or replacement tool until you have verified that it is permitted.
Hardware and operating-system requirements
NVIDIA’s DLSS guide specifies an NVIDIA RTX GPU and a Windows environment meeting the guide’s requirements. Those requirements can depend on the DLSS version, so check the current guide rather than relying on an old setup list. Meeting the hardware and operating-system requirements is not enough by itself: the game still needs a compatible DLSS integration.

Bottom line
ReShade is a post-processing framework, not a universal way to retrofit DLSS into arbitrary older games. Use ReShade for effects it supports; investigate middleware only when the specific game already exposes a compatible upscaler path, and treat legacy API wrappers as attachment aids rather than upscalers.
