Yes—after a YouTube gaming livestream has ended and YouTube has created its archive, you can add chapters by editing the video description and listing timestamps with titles. Those are chapters for the archived video, not markers that appear on a new live rerun. During a live broadcast, DVR provides pause-and-rewind controls instead.
How to add chapters to a completed gaming livestream archive
- Confirm that the stream produced an archive. In YouTube Studio, find the completed stream in your content and open its video details. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If the recording matters, keep a local copy as a backup. - Edit the archive’s description. In YouTube Studio, open the archived video’s details and add a timestamp list in the description. YouTube’s chapter instructions describe this workflow for videos; applying it to a live archive is the archived-video workflow, not a separate rerun-stream feature. - Format the list to meet the manual-chapter requirements. Start with
00:00, add at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. Give each timestamp a short title that accurately describes that point in the VOD. - Save and check the watch page. Confirm that the chapters appear on the video’s progress bar. Viewers can navigate through the progress bar, the description, or the chapter title shown in the player. See YouTube’s guidance on chapters and seeking features.
For example, replace these illustrative entries with times and events that actually occur in your recording:

YouTube says not all videos are eligible for automatic chapters, and eligibility does not guarantee that they will appear. If you add manual timestamps, they override automatic chapters. Chapters belong to the completed video and are based on timestamps in its description. DVR is a live-stream playback feature: it lets viewers pause and rewind while the broadcast is underway, but not seek to a point before the stream began. DVR can be limited or unavailable on very long streams and may have lower limits on some devices or older app versions. Disabling DVR stops viewers from seeking backward during the live broadcast; it does not prevent them from watching the full recording once it is available. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

So, if you are rebroadcasting recorded gameplay as a new live stream, timestamps in the original video’s description should not be treated as chapter markers on that new broadcast. Add chapters to the resulting archive by editing that archive’s description.
When chapters do not appear
- No archive is available: Check YouTube Studio after the stream ends. A stream longer than 12 hours may not have been captured; keep a local recording when you need a reliable copy.
- The timestamp list is not creating chapters: Check that the first timestamp is
00:00, there are at least three timestamps, they are in ascending order, and every chapter is at least 10 seconds long. - You expected markers during the live rerun: Description-based chapters apply to the video/archive, not as live timeline markers. Use DVR for live pause-and-rewind where available.
- You expected YouTube to create chapters automatically: Automatic chapters are not guaranteed. Add and save a manual timestamp list instead.
- The chapters do not show for viewers: Reopen the saved video description, verify the formatting, save any corrections, and check the watch page again.
