You can use Android Auto for free in an older car only if its existing stereo or display already supports it. Connect a compatible Android phone by USB or wirelessly, depending on the car and phone. A USB port, Bluetooth connection, cable, or app cannot make an incompatible stereo support Android Auto.
Can you get Android Auto without changing your stereo?
Yes, if the stereo already supports Android Auto and your phone meets Google’s requirements. Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones; you do not need to download a separate app for car-display use, according to Google’s setup guidance.
Check the owner’s manual, infotainment settings, or vehicle manufacturer’s information for the exact model year, trim, and installed stereo. If you’re unsure, ask the manufacturer. A USB port may be for charging or media playback only: Google says Android Auto does not work in every car with a USB port. Bluetooth audio support alone also does not establish Android Auto compatibility.
What you need for each connection type
| Connection | Google’s general phone requirement | What else is required |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | Android 9.0 (Pie) or newer | A compatible car or stereo, an active data plan, and a high-quality USB cable |
| Wireless | Android 11.0 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for general phone compatibility; Google lists device exceptions | A compatible car or stereo and compatible phone, plus active data service and wireless capability supported by both |
These are Google’s general requirements in its Android Auto setup documentation; exact phone and vehicle compatibility can vary. Check the documentation for your phone and car rather than assuming that meeting the Android version requirement guarantees wireless support.

Set up wired Android Auto on a compatible stereo
- Park the car, switch on the infotainment system, and make sure the phone meets the wired requirements above.
- Connect the phone to the car’s USB port with a high-quality, data-capable USB cable.
- Follow the setup prompts on the phone and the car display. Google recommends completing setup before driving.
If a connection that used to work stops working, try a known-good cable. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends a cable under one metre and says to avoid USB hubs and extensions. A shorter cable may help with a connection problem, but it will not add Android Auto support to an incompatible stereo. See Google’s setup guidance and troubleshooting steps.
Set up wireless Android Auto if both devices support it
- Confirm wireless Android Auto compatibility for the exact car or stereo and phone.
- For the first connection, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup.
- Follow the prompts on the car display and phone, and make sure the phone has an active data connection.
Wireless support depends on the specific car, stereo, and phone; general Android version requirements are not a guarantee for every model or region. Check Google’s current compatibility and setup guidance and the vehicle manufacturer’s information.

What if the car has no compatible display?
You cannot get Android Auto projected onto the factory screen through a setting change, cable, or app if the stereo is incompatible. If you already own a phone mount, you can run a navigation app on the phone as a separate phone-based experience. That is not Android Auto on the car display, and whether using a mounted phone is permitted depends on local rules.
Google described Assistant driving mode as a phone-based option for older cars in a 2021 announcement. That announcement is historical, not a guarantee that the feature is currently available on every phone or a substitute for Android Auto projection. For Android Auto on the car screen, Google’s materials describe connecting to a compatible car or aftermarket stereo.

Which route fits your car?
| Route | Android Auto on car display? | Cost if you already own the needed hardware | Key condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing compatible wired stereo and phone | Yes | No purchase may be needed | Compatible car or stereo, supported phone, suitable USB cable, and active data plan |
| Existing compatible wireless stereo and phone | Yes | No purchase may be needed | Compatible car or stereo and phone, with wireless requirements met |
| Phone mounted with a navigation app | No; the phone screen is used | May be free if you already own a mount | Phone-based navigation, separate from Android Auto projection |
| Compatible aftermarket receiver | Yes | Paid hardware; installation may also cost extra | Receiver must fit the vehicle |
If the factory stereo is incompatible and you want projection on the car display, a compatible aftermarket receiver is the hardware route. Choosing one requires checking your car’s make, model, year, and stereo configuration; it is not a free workaround.
