What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, it can. Microsoft says Recall’s sensitive information filter is on by default and helps prevent snapshots when potentially sensitive information is detected. But the filter is a detection aid, not a guarantee. A reported hands-on test found that Recall still captured some bank screens and other sensitive content with the filter enabled. That test shows a possible failure, not how often it happens or how every current Windows PC will behave.
What the filter is meant to do—and what it cannot promise
Microsoft describes the filter as a way to reduce the storage of information it recognizes as potentially sensitive, including passwords, national ID numbers and credit card numbers. It runs locally using the NPU and Microsoft Classification Engine. Microsoft’s wording is deliberately limited: it helps filter snapshots when sensitive information is detected. It does not promise to identify every secret on every screen. See Microsoft’s Recall privacy and control guidance and its Recall management documentation.
What the reported test found
In an August 1, 2025 report, Tom’s Guide summarized The Register journalist Avram Piltch’s hands-on test of Recall on a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x Copilot+ PC. The report says the filter excluded some financial data, some passwords and most Social Security numbers tested. But Recall also captured bank screens showing balances and deposits, along with some sensitive text when expected cues were absent. Tom’s Guide’s account of the test describes these results; PC Gamer’s report gives additional examples in which labels such as “password” or “pay” appeared to affect detection, and quotes Piltch cautioning that people describe personal data in many ways.
These are observations from one reported test, not a representative study, a measured failure rate, or proof that every current Recall installation behaves the same way. They do establish a practical point: users should not rely on the sensitive information filter as the sole barrier between screen content and saved snapshots.

Why other privacy controls do not guarantee detection
Recall’s storage protections and its content filter address different risks. Microsoft says snapshots and associated data are stored locally, encrypted, and protected with keys tied to the TPM and Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security; accessing Recall requires user authentication. Microsoft’s architecture post also describes VBS Enclaves as a protected-processing boundary and says Recall is opt-in. These controls help protect stored data and access to it. They do not make the filter recognize every secret before a snapshot is saved. See Microsoft’s privacy and control guidance and 2024 security and privacy architecture update.
Website and browser filters have boundaries too
Recall lets users filter supported websites and apps, but website filtering is not a blanket guarantee that nothing related to a site can appear. Microsoft says supported website filters apply when the site is foregrounded or in the active tab. Embedded content, browser history, and a site open in a nonforeground tab may still appear in snapshots. Microsoft lists Edge, Firefox, Opera and Chrome for specified website and private-browsing filtering. Other Chromium-based browsers at version 124 or later filter private browsing activity but do not filter specific websites. Consult Microsoft’s browser and filtering details for the current supported behavior.

Microsoft says supported browsers’ private browsing activity is not saved as snapshots, DRM content is not stored, and supported remote desktop clients are filtered. Other remote clients may be captured unless they implement screen capture protection. Organizations should verify their particular client rather than assume it is excluded.
How to prevent or limit future snapshots
If you cannot risk a sensitive screen being saved, turning off snapshot saving or pausing it is more direct than relying on classification or selective filters. Microsoft documents these controls in Recall’s privacy and control settings.

- Turn saving off or pause it: Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots, then use the snapshot-saving control. You can also use the Recall system tray icon. Changing Recall settings requires Windows Hello authorization.
- Filter specific apps and sites: Add sensitive apps or supported websites in Recall’s filtering settings. This reduces exposure for those targets, but site filtering has the browser, foreground and tab limitations described above.
- Delete snapshots already saved: Use Recall’s controls to review and delete snapshots if unwanted content has been captured. Turning saving off prevents future saving; deletion addresses existing saved material.
- For remote desktop use, verify the client: Check whether your organization’s specific remote desktop client is supported or implements screen capture protection. Microsoft’s management guidance describes the developer mechanism and client considerations.
App developers can exclude their windows from capture
Microsoft Learn documents the WDA_EXCLUDEFROMCAPTURE display affinity flag as a way for an application to keep its window out of Recall and other screenshot applications. This is an app-level developer control, not a Windows setting that automatically protects every app. Whether it helps depends on the application implementing it.

Which protection fits the risk?
| Control | What it helps with | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off or pause snapshot saving | Stops future Recall snapshot saving while off or paused. | Does not by itself remove snapshots already saved; delete those separately. |
| App or website filters | Limits saving for selected targets supported by Recall. | Website behavior depends on supported browsers and foreground/tab context; embedded content and other edge cases may remain. |
| Sensitive information filter | Attempts to detect and exclude snapshots with recognized sensitive information. | Reported testing found some misses; no universal accuracy guarantee is established. |
| App-level screenshot exclusion | Lets an app developer exclude its window using WDA_EXCLUDEFROMCAPTURE. |
Only applies when the app implements the mechanism. |
| Local encrypted storage and Windows Hello | Protects stored data and access to Recall. | Does not prevent a secret from being captured before storage. |
