Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Usually, no. A normal website running in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or another browser has no standard event that tells its server an operating-system screenshot was saved. JavaScript can observe that a page became hidden or lost focus, and it can request a user-approved screen-sharing stream, but neither proves that someone took a screenshot. Detection is more capable in native Android and iOS apps because the operating system controls the screenshot event.
What a website can—and cannot—know
A web page is sandboxed inside the browser. The browser may know that its document changed state, but it does not expose a general “screenshot taken” event to page JavaScript. Consequently, a site cannot reliably distinguish an operating-system screenshot from ordinary browsing activity.
What the server can log
- HTTP requests, downloads, form submissions, and API calls generated by the page.
- Navigation, session, and authentication events.
- Timing, device hints, and other information the browser legitimately sends.
Those records describe traffic, not pixels. A screenshot captured with a keyboard shortcut, hardware buttons, a system utility, or another device normally creates no network request that identifies the action.
Why “screenshot detection scripts” are unreliable
Sites sometimes watch for blur, focus, or the Page Visibility API’s visibilitychange event. These signals have many causes: switching tabs, minimizing a window, opening another application, locking a device, or simply covering the browser. They do not establish that a screenshot was taken. Browser user-agent checks and timing changes are equally inconclusive.

Browser APIs: visibility is not capture
Page Visibility API
The Page Visibility API reports whether a document is visible. A visibilitychange event can occur when a tab is switched, a window is minimized, or content is otherwise occluded. It is useful for pausing video or background work, but it is not a screenshot detector. A page that becomes hidden may have been screenshotted—or may simply be in another tab.
getDisplayMedia() is consented screen sharing
navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia() lets a site request a stream of a tab, window, or display. The browser requires a secure context, a recent user interaction, and an explicit permission choice. The user agent must let the person choose a surface each time. The result is a MediaStream intended for screen sharing or recording, not silent notification that an operating-system screenshot was saved.
async function shareScreen() {
const stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({
video: true,
audio: false
});
// Use stream with WebRTC or a recorder after the user approves it.
return stream;
}
This flow is visible and permissioned. A site cannot invoke it invisibly to monitor screenshots, and a stream does not tell the page that the user later pressed a system screenshot shortcut.
Website versus native app
| Environment | What is available | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary website | No standard screenshot event | Cannot reliably detect an OS or device screenshot. |
| Browser visibility signals | visibilitychange, focus and blur |
Indicate document state only; many non-screenshot causes exist. |
| Browser display capture | getDisplayMedia() |
User-approved screen-sharing or recording stream, not silent screenshot detection. |
| Native Android app | Android 14 screenshot-detection callback | Can receive a callback for supported hardware-button screenshots, without the image. |
| Native Apple app | UIKit screenshot and capture notifications | Can react after a screenshot and when recording, mirroring, AirPlay, or other capture status changes. |
Native APIs are more capable because the operating system owns the screenshot action. A web page does not have that position of trust.

Android: detection and blocking are separate
Android 14 screenshot detection
Android 14 introduced a privacy-preserving screenshot-detection API. A native app declares android.permission.DETECT_SCREEN_CAPTURE and registers a per-activity callback using the DETECT_SCREEN_CAPTURE capability. For supported hardware-button screenshots, Android invokes the callback and shows a system notice. The callback does not provide the screenshot image.
This applies to an Android application, not a web page opened in Chrome. A website embedded in a browser cannot assume that Android’s native callback is available to it.

FLAG_SECURE for prevention
An Android app can set the FLAG_SECURE window flag to keep an activity out of screenshots and non-secure displays. It is a mitigation, not an absolute guarantee. Android’s fraud-prevention guidance reports about 70% reliability on Android 11 (API 30) and lower, so developers should account for device and OS differences.
window.setFlags(
WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_SECURE,
WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_SECURE
)
Use the flag for sensitive app screens when blocking capture is preferable to allowing it. Test the specific Android versions, manufacturers, recording paths, casting scenarios, and accessibility tools your app supports.
iPhone and iPad: UIKit notifications
After a screenshot
Apple documents UIApplication.userDidTakeScreenshotNotification, posted after a person takes a screenshot on the device. It has no userInfo dictionary. A native app can observe it and respond—for example, by recording an audit event or updating an in-app warning.
Recording, mirroring, and AirPlay
UIScreen.capturedDidChangeNotification reports changes in capture status when a screen is recorded, mirrored, sent over AirPlay, or otherwise cloned to another destination. This is different from the post-screenshot notification: it describes an ongoing or changed capture state, not a saved still image.
Both are UIKit notifications for native apps. They are not browser APIs, and a website cannot generalize them to Safari content.
Can a website block screenshots?
Not reliably. A browser page cannot impose Android’s FLAG_SECURE on the operating system, and it cannot control a second camera photographing the display. It can make copying harder with ordinary application techniques—such as permissioned viewers or watermarking—but those do not create dependable screenshot prevention or detection.

If confidentiality is important, choose controls that match the threat:
- Account and authorization controls: limit who can view the content and revoke access when needed.
- Watermarks: add an account name, timestamp, or document identifier so redistribution is attributable. Watermarks discourage misuse but do not stop capture.
- Native Android controls: use
FLAG_SECUREfor selected activities, while documenting its platform limits. - Native iOS monitoring: observe UIKit notifications when your product needs an after-the-fact response.
- Browser capture consent: use
getDisplayMedia()only for a clear, user-approved sharing or recording feature.
Common scenarios and the accurate answer
“Can Chrome detect that I pressed Print Screen?”
Not through a standard web API. Chrome may expose ordinary page-state changes, but it does not notify the site that the operating system saved a screenshot.
“Will a site know if I screenshot on an iPhone?”
A native iOS app can receive Apple’s post-screenshot notification. A website loaded in Safari does not receive that UIKit notification as a web-page event.
“Can an Android website stop screenshots?”
Not as a general browser page. FLAG_SECURE is a native Android window control. Android 14’s screenshot callback likewise belongs to a native app with the required permission.

No. A visibility or focus change is compatible with many actions and cannot prove what happened.
Testing your own site without mistaking clues for proof
- Test the actual browser and operating systems your users have, including desktop shortcuts and Android or iOS hardware-button combinations.
- Log
visibilitychangeonly for legitimate lifecycle behavior, such as pausing work. Do not label those entries “screenshots.” - If you need screen sharing, start
getDisplayMedia()from an obvious user action and explain what surface will be shared. - For a native app, implement the platform API appropriate to the minimum OS version, request only the documented permission, and test recording, mirroring, casting, and accessibility cases.
- Design your response around uncertainty: watermark sensitive material and protect access rather than promising that every capture will be detected.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to obtain consistent screenshots of websites for documentation, testing, or previews, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request instead of maintaining browser automation. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are free, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
It also offers an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. Features include full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page options, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, selector hiding, selector or network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

Troubleshooting capture assumptions
A visibility event appears in your logs
Cause: tab switching, minimizing, locking, or occlusion can all trigger it. Fix: treat it as lifecycle telemetry only; never infer a screenshot.
A browser capture request is denied
Cause: the page is not in a secure context, there was no recent user interaction, or the user declined surface selection. Fix: serve over HTTPS, start the request from a user gesture, explain the prompt, and handle permission errors without retry loops.
An Android callback never fires
Cause: the app may be below Android 14, lack the declared permission, or be using an unsupported capture path. Fix: gate the feature by OS version, verify manifest and activity registration, and document that the callback does not cover every possible recording or camera capture.
FLAG_SECURE does not behave identically on every device
Cause: manufacturer and OS differences; Android reports about 70% reliability on Android 11 and lower. Fix: test supported devices and combine the flag with access controls and watermarking.
Bottom line
A conventional website cannot reliably tell that a user took an operating-system screenshot, and browser focus or visibility changes are not proof. Native Android and iOS apps can receive limited, documented operating-system notifications, while Android can attempt prevention with FLAG_SECURE subject to platform limits. Treat browser “detection” claims skeptically, ask for consent when sharing a screen, and use access controls or watermarks when the content is sensitive.
