Usually, no—not when recording starts outside the webpage. An ordinary site can observe a screen-sharing or recording session that it requested with the browser’s MediaDevices.getDisplayMedia() API. The documented web platform does not provide a universal event telling a page that someone pressed an operating-system screenshot shortcut or started a separate desktop recorder.
That boundary applies to ordinary page JavaScript. Browser extensions, native applications, enterprise management, and platform-specific controls can have additional capabilities. Treat browser, operating-system, and policy behavior as configuration- and version-dependent.
What a website can actually see
A page can see a capture stream when it starts the capture flow itself. The main API is navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia(). In a supporting browser and secure context (HTTPS), the call opens a browser-controlled chooser. The user selects a display, window, or tab and grants access. The promise then resolves to a MediaStream containing the selected video track.
The page can attach that stream to a video element, record it with MediaRecorder, or transmit it with WebRTC. In that case, the site knows that its own capture request succeeded and can observe events such as the track ending. It does not gain a magical feed of every capture operation occurring on the computer.

What the stream contains
- The selected display surface, window, or tab, subject to what the browser offers in its chooser.
- Video-track state, including when the user stops sharing.
- Audio only when the browser and selected surface make audio available and the user permits it.
- Data the page itself records or sends after receiving the stream.
The page does not automatically receive the user’s entire desktop merely because the API exists. The browser mediates the request and the user chooses what to share.
Can a website tell if you take a screenshot?
For an ordinary webpage, the documented APIs discussed here do not define a general notification for an operating-system screenshot shortcut or a screenshot made by a separate application. A careful statement is: the standard browser APIs let a page observe capture that the page initiated; they do not specify a universal page-facing signal for screenshots started outside the page.
That is not the same as saying that no software can ever know. An enterprise agent, browser extension, native application, remote-support tool, or operating-system feature may operate outside ordinary page JavaScript. Their behavior depends on platform, permissions, and management configuration. The web standards reviewed here do not establish a complete cross-platform inventory of those possibilities.
Why screenshot myths persist
Some sites change their interface when a user presses a key, loses focus, enters fullscreen, or switches tabs. Those signals can be useful for anti-cheating or workflow logic, but they are not proof that a screenshot was taken. A blur event, visibility change, keyboard event, or fullscreen transition can have many causes and cannot be treated as a reliable screenshot detector.

How browser-mediated screen sharing works
- Use a secure context. In browsers that implement the API,
getDisplayMedia()is exposed only in a secure context. Test over HTTPS rather than assuming localhost behavior represents production. - Call the API from an intentional user action. Browsers generally expect a user gesture, such as clicking a “Share screen” button. Do not design around an invisible or automatic prompt.
- Let the browser show its chooser. The user agent asks the person to select a display surface. A page cannot silently choose any screen.
- Handle the returned stream. Add the video track to a preview, pass it to
MediaRecorder, or send it through WebRTC. - Watch for termination. The user can stop sharing from browser controls. Listen for the track’s
endedevent and clean up your recording or call.
Minimal working example
This example demonstrates capture initiated by the page. It does not detect external recording.

</script>If you want a recording, create a MediaRecorder(stream), collect its dataavailable chunks, and stop it when the video track ends. If you transmit the stream, use the appropriate WebRTC signaling and consent flow. Recording or transmitting someone’s screen can involve privacy, employment, education, or data-protection obligations; explain what is captured and obtain the required permission.
Permission is deliberately non-persistent
The W3C Screen Capture Working Draft dated 16 July 2026 says the user agent must let the end user choose which display surface to share from the available choices every time. It also says that a permission grant cannot persist. This is a working draft, not a final Recommendation, so it should not be presented as a guarantee that every browser currently behaves identically.
In practical terms, a site should expect a fresh browser-mediated decision for each capture request. Build an explicit start and stop control, describe the surface being requested, and treat cancellation as a normal outcome rather than an exceptional failure.

Extensions are a separate capability
Chrome’s developer documentation describes both getDisplayMedia() and extension-specific tab capture. The former opens a browser chooser. An extension using tabCapture can capture a tab after the required user gesture and extension permissions. That is an extension workflow, not evidence that an ordinary website can silently discover a recorder launched elsewhere.
When investigating a report that “the site knew I was recording,” identify the execution context first: page script, installed extension, native desktop client, remote-proctoring software, or an administrator-controlled browser. The answer can differ substantially between those contexts.
Browser support, policies, and compatibility
Check the exact browser and version
MDN labels getDisplayMedia() as having limited availability. Support, selectable surfaces, audio behavior, and permission UX can vary by browser version and operating system. Feature-detect before showing a share button:

Enterprise policy can block the request
Chrome Enterprise documentation describes a Screen video capture policy for ChromeOS and Chrome on Windows, macOS, and Linux. An administrator can disallow sites from prompting for a screen-video stream, with configured site exceptions. If the chooser never appears on a managed device, check policy before assuming that the page’s code is broken.
This policy controls whether browser-mediated sharing can be initiated. It is not evidence that Chrome reports unrelated operating-system recordings to webpages.

Design and privacy guidance for developers
- State exactly what will be captured and whether it will be stored or transmitted.
- Request only the tracks and surfaces required for the feature.
- Provide a visible stop control and respond immediately when the track ends.
- Do not describe focus, blur, keyboard, or visibility events as proof of a screenshot.
- Log the result of your own capture request, not an unsupported claim about outside recording.
- Test unmanaged and managed Chrome configurations, because administrator policy can change availability.
- Review consent, retention, access, and deletion requirements for your jurisdiction and use case.

What this means in practice
If a site itself calls getDisplayMedia(), it can observe the stream it requested and react when sharing stops. If you press an operating-system screenshot key or run an unrelated recorder, the ordinary page APIs described here do not give the page a universal detection event. Claims beyond that require evidence about a particular extension, native app, managed policy, browser build, or operating system.

Can JavaScript detect the Print Screen key?
