Not confirmed. YouTube can receive an encoder feed and lets you schedule a live event, but its documentation does not establish that VLC can automatically switch videos by time of day. Those are separate tasks: connecting a compatible feed to YouTube and scheduling which video that feed plays. Verify the current VLC capabilities and test the complete setup before relying on it.
What YouTube scheduling does—and does not—do
YouTube’s Live Control Room lets you create or schedule a live stream event. The documented encoder workflow still requires connecting the encoder and starting it when the stream is due to begin; scheduling the event does not show how to switch among videos within an incoming feed. YouTube’s encoder instructions do not establish a VLC timetable or timed source changes.
So, treat these as two separate questions: can your chosen VLC version send a feed YouTube accepts, and can it change that feed’s video at specified times? The available YouTube guidance answers how to connect an encoder, not whether current VLC supports both requirements.
What a YouTube encoder connection requires
YouTube’s documented setup uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. You enter those details in an encoder, start it, check the preview, and use YouTube’s live controls to end the event. A stream key is a credential that lets YouTube accept the encoder’s feed. Keep it private. YouTube documents how to create or reset keys and notes that only a channel owner or manager can reset one; see Manage live stream settings. Do not share a real key in screenshots, public posts, or example commands.
How to check whether a VLC workflow will work
- Check the current VLC documentation. Confirm that the release you intend to use supports the ingest protocol and connection details YouTube provides, including RTMPS if you plan to use YouTube’s recommended option. Do not assume that general playlist or streaming features prove compatibility.
- Check timed switching separately. Look for documented scheduling or automation that changes the active video at the times you need. A playlist that plays items in sequence is not, by itself, evidence of time-of-day scheduling.
- Set up a test event in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the event, then use the current stream URL and key as YouTube instructs. Avoid using a public event for an untested setup.
- Test the complete path before depending on it. Start the encoder, inspect YouTube’s preview, confirm the stream is accessible, and check that the video actually changes when expected. YouTube advises preparing the encoder in advance and monitoring audio and video; see Streaming tips.
- Check stream health during the test. YouTube recommends matching stream quality to available upload capacity and testing before the event. Its current settings guidance includes recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so select values for your actual configuration rather than copying a bitrate without context. Common problems to check
- The event is scheduled, but nothing is playing: Scheduling creates the YouTube event workflow; it does not replace connecting and starting the encoder. Check the encoder connection and YouTube preview.
- YouTube does not accept the feed: Recheck the stream URL and key against the current Live Control Room details, and confirm that the encoder’s protocol is compatible. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but the cited guidance does not confirm VLC compatibility.
- The stream starts, but the video does not change on schedule: Verify that the specific VLC version and configuration has documented time-triggered source switching. Do not assume ordinary playlist playback will meet a clock-based schedule.
- Video or audio is unstable: Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators, available upload capacity, and the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate against YouTube’s current recommendations.
- The key may have been exposed: Treat it like a password. If necessary, have a channel owner or manager reset it in YouTube’s live stream settings.
