Sometimes, for low-risk, tightly scoped software—but a working app is not proof that it is safe or ready to run in production. Vibe coding can help someone build a prototype or interface without writing code by hand. The harder question is who will validate it, secure it, monitor it, and maintain it when users and real data depend on it. Current evidence is strongest for prototyping and user-interface work, and much weaker for production, data-intensive, and safety-critical systems.

What does “vibe coding” mean?

Vibe coding is a way of building software in which a person describes an outcome in natural language, an AI generates code, and the person iterates by evaluating the result and asking for changes. In its stricter sense, the person may not inspect the generated code line by line. That differs from AI-assisted programming by an engineer who reviews and edits each change.

The distinction matters: generating an app without manually writing code does not remove the work of specifying requirements, checking behavior, or taking responsibility for what runs. It shifts more of that work onto directing and validating the system.

What does the evidence say about production use?

The evidence is mixed, and the findings below measure different things. They should not be combined into one productivity estimate or treated as proof that production deployments are safe.

Source and scope Finding What it does—and does not—show
Siddeeq et al., 2026 multivocal literature review; 47 sources, including 28 peer-reviewed and 19 grey-literature sources 21 of 47 sources (45%) reported short-term productivity or time-to-prototype gains. The review found the strongest evidence for prototyping and interface work. It says evidence on maintainability, long-term quality, and safeguard effectiveness remains limited, especially for production, data-intensive, and safety-critical settings.
Michels et al., 2026 state-of-the-art review summarizing different studies Peer-reviewed field experiments reported 26% more tasks per week; an independent randomized trial measured a 19% slowdown; team telemetry showed code-review time increasing 441%. These are separate findings from different contexts, not a single expected effect. The review summary does not establish a universal speed gain or loss for every team or task.
New Relic, June 2026 report of surveyed organizations and technology leaders 88% of surveyed organizations said vibe coding was included in formal production policies; 62% of surveyed technology leaders said teams often trusted AI-generated code enough to ship without line-by-line manual verification. These are reported policies and behaviors, not independent confirmation that the resulting deployments were secure or reliable.
Bubble survey of 793 current and former users of its platform, September–October 2025 71.5% felt confident using visual development for mission-critical applications, compared with 32.5% for vibe coding; 9% said they deployed vibe coding for a majority of their business-critical applications. Bubble says this was a survey of its own user community, not a neutral industry sample. These figures describe those respondents, not all builders or businesses.
HFS Research survey results for UK&I firms Respondents cited legal, security, and compliance risk aversion (49%); low confidence in effective use (43%); maintainability and technical debt (38%); and difficulty auditing or validating outputs (32%). These are reported barriers among surveyed UK&I firms, not universal rates across regions or industries.

IBM’s security overview summarizes separate studies that identify vulnerabilities in AI-generated code and argues that secure coding practices need to adapt to AI-assisted development. Those studies do not establish one defect rate for every AI-generated application. The broader lesson is that generated code still needs security review appropriate to its use.

Where is vibe coding a reasonable fit?

It is most defensible when the goal is to explore an idea, build a demonstrator, or create an interface whose failure has limited consequences. A prototype can show that a prompt-and-revision loop produced something runnable; it cannot by itself establish security, maintainability, or operational readiness.

A narrow internal helper may also be a candidate for production if its data, access, and failure modes are constrained and someone can own it after launch. That is a risk-based judgment, not a threshold validated by the cited studies. “Production” can mean anything from a small internal utility to software handling sensitive information or business-critical operations, so the label alone does not determine whether engineer involvement is necessary.

Question Lower-risk signal Higher-risk signal
What happens if it fails? Work can pause or be completed another way, with little lasting impact. Failure could affect safety, finances, legal obligations, essential operations, or many users.
What data does it handle? It uses non-sensitive test data or a limited dataset with controlled access. It stores or processes sensitive, personal, regulated, or business-critical data.
How complex are its connections and state? Few integrations, simple workflows, and limited persistent state. Many external systems, permissions, concurrent users, or complicated data changes.
Can someone validate changes? Expected behavior can be checked with repeatable tests and a clear review process. Outputs are difficult to audit, errors are subtle, or no one can judge whether a change is safe.
Can the team operate it? There is a way to monitor problems, restore service, and revert a bad change. No one can investigate incidents, restore data, roll back releases, or maintain the software.

The higher-risk signals do not prove that AI cannot help build the software. They indicate that relying on generation alone leaves important responsibilities uncovered; bring in someone qualified to review and own those parts.

What to do before a vibe-coded app goes live

  1. Name an accountable owner. Identify who approves releases, handles incidents, and makes future changes. If nobody can take responsibility for those tasks, keep the app out of production.
  2. Write down the boundary. State what the application is meant to do, who may use it, what data it may handle, and what it must not do. Include important failure cases, not just the happy path.
  3. Check the behavior independently. Test expected workflows, invalid inputs, permissions, and failure conditions. Have a person who understands the consequences verify results rather than asking the same AI system that generated the code to certify it.
  4. Review security and data handling. Check access controls, secrets, data exposure, dependencies, and the effects of connected services. For sensitive data or consequential systems, use qualified engineering or security review.
  5. Plan release and recovery. Decide how the app will be deployed, monitored, updated, and rolled back. Preserve a safe way to recover from bad releases or data mistakes before real users depend on it.
  6. Keep changes controlled. Record what changed, test revisions before release, and reassess the app when its purpose, users, integrations, or data change. A tool that was low risk as a prototype can become higher risk as its role expands.

When is an engineer still needed?

An engineer is especially important when the application handles sensitive data, connects to important systems, must remain available, or could cause material harm when it behaves incorrectly. Engineering work is also needed when generated changes are hard to review, tests do not provide meaningful confidence, or no one on the team can diagnose and fix problems.

That does not mean every line must be handwritten or that an engineer must build every prototype. It means production responsibility must be covered. Depending on the project, an engineer may review architecture and code, strengthen tests and security, set up deployment and monitoring, or take ownership of ongoing maintenance. The evidence does not support treating an AI-generated first version as a substitute for those capabilities.
