No treatment can simply refresh Van Gogh’s faded flowers to their original colors. Different changes have different causes: some red pigments faded, some chrome yellow darkened, and varnish applied after Van Gogh’s death discolored particular paintings. Conservators first determine what changed; they may then focus on preventive care, carefully selected surface treatment, or digital visualization. A digital reconstruction is an evidence-based interpretation, not a recovered original image.
Why did Van Gogh’s flower paintings change color?
There is no single explanation for the altered appearance of Van Gogh’s flowers. Pigments can change chemically, while later surface coatings can discolor on top of the paint. Distinguishing those causes matters because cleaning a surface cannot reverse a pigment that has faded or darkened.
Red lake pigments faded
Van Gogh used vivid red lake pigments, including geranium lake. The Metropolitan Museum of Art explains that many red lakes were fugitive in daylight. In Irises and Roses, fading changed relationships between colors and could erase details that helped define the flowers. The Met’s account, “Paintings Fade Like Flowers,” also cautions that digital reconstructions can provide only a broad sense of original colors; they cannot establish every nuance of lost pinks and violets.

Some yellow pigment darkened
For the Amsterdam Sunflowers, University of Amsterdam reporting attributes color change mainly to fading geranium lake red and darkening chrome yellow. This is a distinct problem from a yellowed surface coating: the paint itself has changed. The university’s REVIGO project describes research into Van Gogh’s color changes and efforts to simulate original colors and discoloration.

Later varnish changed the surface
The Amsterdam Sunflowers also has multiple later varnish layers, which the University of Amsterdam report says Van Gogh did not apply. Varnish discoloration and pigment change are separate conservation questions. Removing or treating a discolored coating may alter the surface’s appearance, but it cannot restore color lost through pigment chemistry.
How do conservators decide what can be done?
There is no universal cleaning recipe for a faded flower painting. Conservators assess the specific work, its materials, condition, and history before choosing whether intervention is safe or useful.
Examine the painting and its history
The Van Gogh Museum’s study of Sunflowers involved specialists examining the support, ground, and paint layers, as well as earlier restorations. Those details help explain what is original, what changed, and how prior work may constrain new treatment. See the museum’s conservation-treatment account.
Weigh surface treatment against risk
The 2014–2015 treatment of Field with Irises near Arles illustrates why selective cleaning can be complicated. Its textured paint and solvent-sensitive colors limited what could safely be removed. Researchers describe cautious, selective varnish removal rather than an attempt to clean every area uniformly. Their study of digital varnish modeling and treatment explains that the model represents the optical effect of aged varnish; it does not reverse changes in the pigments.

Favor prevention when treatment is too risky
The conservation chapter on the Amsterdam Sunflowers concludes that past interventions limit what can safely be attempted and that the balance favors preventive conservation with only minor restoration. The aim is to protect the painting and make carefully justified choices, not to force it toward an imagined original appearance. The chapter is in Van Gogh’s Sunflowers Illuminated: Art meets Science, a scholarly volume rather than a restoration manual.
What a digital reconstruction can—and cannot—show
Digital reconstruction can help viewers explore how a painting might have looked before particular color changes. For Irises and Roses, the Met emphasizes that such images offer only a broad impression: the exact lost shades and nuances cannot all be determined.

A modeled image is therefore an interpretation based on available evidence and assumptions. It is not a photograph of the painting at the moment Van Gogh finished it, and it does not change the physical work. In the Field with Irises near Arles study, digital modeling addressed the optical effect of aged varnish—not the reversal of pigment degradation.

- Cause: Is the concern faded or darkened pigment, a discolored varnish layer, or another surface change?
- Evidence: Has the specific painting been examined through technical imaging or analysis, and have its treatment records been considered?
- Intervention: Is the proposal preventive care, selective treatment of a surface layer, or a digital visualization?
- Risk: Could textured paint, solvent-sensitive colors, or earlier restoration limit safe treatment?
- Certainty: Does the result describe a physical treatment, or a modeled interpretation with assumptions?
These approaches are not interchangeable. Surface treatment may address a coating, while prevention reduces future risks and digital visualization explores possible appearances. None can chemically restore a pigment that has already changed.
