Usually, you cannot put two ordinary standalone dimmers on opposite ends of a 3-way lighting circuit. The standard arrangement is one dimmer paired with one mechanical 3-way switch: either location can turn the light on or off, but only the dimmer changes brightness. To dim from both locations, use a compatible multi-location system with a master dimmer and its specified companion control.

What “two dimmers” can mean

A 3-way circuit controls one light from two locations; “3-way” does not mean three switches. The term “two dimmers” can describe either two ordinary dimmers installed on the circuit or a purpose-built multi-location system that provides dimming controls at both locations. Those are different arrangements.

Two ordinary standalone dimmers

Do not assume two conventional dimmers can control the same load together. Manufacturers describe the typical 3-way setup as one dimmer and one mechanical 3-way switch. Leviton likewise says normally only one dimmer controls the load in a 3-way or 4-way circuit. Follow the instructions for the exact dimmer rather than combining devices based on appearance or brand alone.

A matched multi-location system

Some systems are designed to provide brightness control from more than one location. They use a master dimmer with compatible companion controls; the companion communicates with the master, which controls the load. Both locations can then offer dimming, if the exact models and wiring meet the manufacturer’s requirements.

How compatible systems differ

These are product-specific examples, not interchangeable wiring recipes. Check the exact product’s installation guide before buying or installing controls.

  • Lutron Maestro: Lutron documents one Maestro dimmer with specified companion controls, including the MA-R in the cited configuration. The MA-R is not intended to be used by itself. Lutron also distinguishes companion dimmers, which adjust brightness, from accessory switches that only toggle the light. See Lutron’s Maestro installation instructions for the applicable model’s pairing and location limits.
  • Leviton: Select Decora Smart, Decora Digital, Renu, and Renoir II lines support companion dimmer remotes. Leviton’s instructions give compatible Decora Smart and Decora Digital examples; support in one product line does not establish compatibility across all Leviton dimmers. Review Leviton’s companion installation instructions and the guide for your exact devices.
  • HALO Home: Cooper Lighting documents a two-location 3-way installation using accessory dimmers. That system’s instructions require a neutral at both dimmer locations and direct users to stop and consult a licensed electrician if a neutral is unavailable. See the HALO Home dimmer instructions.

What to check before choosing a multi-location dimmer

  • Control at the companion location: Confirm the companion adjusts brightness, not just on/off. Some accessory switches only toggle the light.
  • Exact model pairing: Check which master and companion models the instructions permit, plus the maximum number of companion devices for that configuration.
  • Neutral and other wiring requirements: Requirements vary by product. HALO Home’s cited instructions require a neutral at both locations, while Lutron notes that neutral requirements vary by Maestro model.
  • Supported circuit diagram: Compare the wiring in your switch boxes with the diagram for the exact system. Do not infer compatibility from a similar-looking device or a different model’s instructions.

Installation safety and when to call an electrician

Turn off power at the breaker or fuse box before wiring, as Lutron instructs. Identify the common terminal by its differently colored screw or label; do not rely on its physical position. Switch-box wiring varies, so a product diagram is not a universal wiring guide.

If your wiring differs from the manufacturer’s diagram, you cannot identify the terminals safely, or a required neutral is absent, stop and consult a qualified electrician. Leviton’s guidance also directs users to an electrician when wiring does not match its examples or a required neutral is missing. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish whether a particular installation complies with local electrical code; check the rules for your jurisdiction.

The practical answer

For a standard 3-way setup, use one dimmer and one mechanical 3-way switch. If you want dimming from both locations, select a manufacturer-approved master-and-companion system and follow the exact model’s requirements. Two ordinary dimmers are not a safe compatibility assumption.
