The TopChair-S is a powered wheelchair designed to climb stairs, but it does not work on every staircase. A 2012 assessment by France’s Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) documents a maximum step height of 20 cm and excludes stairs that are too steep, frozen, very slippery, or spiral. Its stair-detection system also has limitations on glass, openwork, and highly reflective steps. Whether it is suitable depends on the chair, the user, and the staircase.
How the TopChair-S climbs stairs
The HAS assessment describes three operating modes: road, steps, and caterpillar tracks. In steps mode, the wheels retract and reinforced rubber tracks support the chair as it moves over stair edges. The separate caterpillar-track mode is described for situations such as ramps and irregular, slippery, or sloping ground. These are distinct operating modes, not evidence that every ramp or surface is suitable.
The device is therefore more than a conventional wheelchair with larger wheels: stair travel relies on the tracks and a specific mode. Its documented stair capability should not be read as a guarantee for a particular flight of stairs.
Which stairs are within the documented limits?
The 2012 HAS assessment sets a maximum obstacle or step height of 20 cm and says the chair cannot be used on stairs that are too steep, frozen, very slippery, or spiral. It does not provide a universal incline threshold here, so a staircase should not be judged suitable from step height alone.

- Automatic detection: Infrared sensors detect steps, but the assessment says automatic detection cannot be used on glass or openwork staircases, or on steps with highly reflective surfaces.
- Manual mode: The assessment says to use manual mode in those detection-limited situations. That instruction does not override the other stated exclusions or confirm that a specific staircase is safe.
Before use, consult the current user guide, manufacturer or distributor, and a qualified mobility professional about the actual chair, user, and staircase. The available assessment does not establish current independent performance testing across different stair geometries, surfaces, weather, or user conditions.
What the assessment says about speed, range, and size
The figures below are specifications recorded in the 2012 HAS assessment; they describe that documented configuration and should not be assumed to apply to every chair or current configuration.

The contrast between wheel and track speeds is important: the road-mode maximum is not the stair-climbing speed. The assessment also reports that distributors adjust speed and acceleration settings according to the user’s wishes and abilities.

What to verify before considering one
- Ask for the current user guide and confirm the exact chair configuration and operating instructions.
- Have the intended staircase assessed, including its slope, step height, surface, shape, and any glass or openwork construction.
- Discuss the user’s needs, controls, training, and speed or acceleration settings with the manufacturer or distributor and a qualified mobility professional.
- Confirm local availability, servicing, and transport arrangements. The 2012 assessment’s 150 kg empty-weight figure is for a chair with a Recaro seat, not a complete transport plan.
Are the TopChair-S’s current maker and availability clear?
No single current manufacturer or sales territory is established by the cited records. A 2019 HAS opinion lists LOGO SILVER as manufacturer, while a 2011 HAS opinion names TopChair SAS in France. Those dated records do not establish who currently manufactures, sells, or services the model in a particular country. Check locally before relying on availability or support.
