Partly. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE can handle a large share of everyday laptop work, including web research, email, note-taking, video calls, streaming, and document review, provided you add a keyboard and your essential apps run well on Android. It is not a safe assumption for work that depends on desktop-only software, specific plug-ins, or specialized peripherals. The right answer depends on the apps and tasks you need, so the rest of this guide shows how to test that before you buy.
Where the tablet works as a laptop stand-in
Samsung’s May 27, 2021 launch announcement (Samsung Global Newsroom) describes the tablet, paired with Samsung DeX and the Book Cover Keyboard, as something you can use “just like a laptop,” with a PC-like interface. Samsung also says Multi-Active Window can display up to three apps at once. Both are software capabilities as Samsung describes them. Neither is an independent measurement of how smoothly several apps run together over a full day.
Tasks that transfer well
- Web research and browsing, including many open tabs in a browser
- Email, calendar, and messaging in mobile apps
- Note-taking and sketching with the S Pen, which is included in the box
- Video calls and streaming
- Reviewing documents, and light editing in apps that run natively on Android
DeX and multitasking
DeX is a desktop-style layer that runs on top of Android. It is not Windows or macOS, and it does not change the underlying operating system. Samsung’s US datasheet also warns: “Certain apps may not run or may require license (for purchase) on Samsung DeX.” Check each app you depend on in DeX mode, not only in normal tablet mode.
Where it breaks down
Desktop-only software
If your work depends on a Windows or macOS program, a browser plug-in that does not exist on Android, or a specific development, design, or accounting tool, the tablet is not a drop-in replacement. The manufacturer material does not establish compatibility for any named professional application, so you need to confirm each one yourself.

Office document editing
Samsung’s Wi-Fi datasheet states: “Microsoft 365® license required for purchase to edit Excel,® Word® or PowerPoint® documents. License sold separately.” Opening and reading Office files is a different requirement from editing them, so plan for the license if your job involves editing spreadsheets, reports, or slide decks. Confirm current license terms in your region before you buy.
Peripherals and external displays
Samsung says DeX on a monitor requires a supported display and can use an HDMI adapter, a multiport adapter, or a cable. Whether your specific monitor, dock, or peripheral works is not something the manufacturer guarantees across all hardware, so test your exact combination before you rely on it.

The 10,090 mAh figure is a manufacturer specification, not a measured runtime. No independent workday battery test of this model is cited here, so do not convert it into hours of use. Samsung’s US datasheet describes a Wi-Fi model using the Qualcomm SM7225 platform. LTE or 5G versions differ, so confirm the exact model number before comparing specifications.

Budget the complete setup
The tablet’s listed price is only the starting point. A laptop-style setup usually adds:
- Keyboard: The Book Cover Keyboard is sold separately. Typing for long periods is much harder without one.
- DeX monitor connection: An HDMI adapter, multiport adapter, or cable, plus a supported monitor.
- Microsoft 365 license: Required to edit Excel, Word, or PowerPoint files, and sold separately.
- Charger: Launch materials state that the charger for 45W charging is sold separately.
- Storage: microSD expansion up to 1 TB, if the base 64 GB or 128 GB is not enough.
Software support horizon
When Samsung’s security-update scope page was checked on October 7, 2026, it did not list the Galaxy Tab S7 FE among scheduled update devices. Samsung states that the list changes periodically and that update availability and timing vary by market, carrier, and model. For a work device, that matters: check support for your exact model and region before buying, and factor the remaining support period into how long you plan to keep the tablet. An absence from the list is not a promise about every unit or every app-level update.

Decision checklist
- List the five tasks you do most often and the exact app you use for each.
- For each app, confirm on Android that you can complete the task fully: editing, multitasking, opening your file types, connecting an external display, and using your peripherals.
- Price the real setup: tablet, keyboard, DeX monitor connection, any Microsoft 365 license, and charger.
- Confirm security-update coverage for your exact model and region.
- If any indispensable workflow fails step 2, keep a laptop or choose a Windows or macOS device. Do not assume DeX will cover it.
How to compare it with a laptop
Compare the two options on these five axes:
- Compatibility with your required apps and workflows
- Typing and pointing comfort with the keyboard and trackpad or mouse you would actually use
- Multitasking and external display needs
- Total setup cost, including licenses and adapters
- Remaining security-update support
Samsung’s documentation covers the tablet’s features and caveats, but it does not offer a direct benchmark against laptops on speed, endurance, or value, and this article does not name a winner on those points. Let your own app testing and price comparison decide.
