Yes. In Tom’s Guide writer Dan Bracaglia’s reported three-minute shower test, the Outdoor Research Foray 3L kept almost all water out. His white T-shirt had one small wet spot on the chest, where water entered through the gap between the hood and chin. That is a promising result from one informal test—not a laboratory rating or a guarantee in every storm.
What happened in the three-minute shower test?
Bracaglia wore the Foray 3L under a shower for three minutes, moving so water hit different parts of the jacket. Afterward, he unzipped it and checked his white T-shirt. He reported that almost no water had passed through the shell, apart from the small wet spot near the hood-and-chin gap.
The result points to a practical distinction: the jacket’s shell can resist water well while an opening around the face remains a potential entry point. A shower test does not replicate wind-driven rain, prolonged exposure, or every way a jacket may be worn.
What is the Foray 3L built to do?
The current men’s Foray 3L is a three-layer rain shell made with Outdoor Research’s AscentShell Dry fabric. The manufacturer lists 100% recycled nylon with mechanical stretch and a Nikwax Direct.Dry durable water-repellent finish. - Seams and zippers: Fully taped seams and water-resistant zippers help limit water entry at construction points.
- Ventilation: TorsoFlo vents run along the sides and open broadly. Tom’s Guide notes that the openings do not have mesh, so they trade some protection from wind and debris for airflow.
- Mobility: Mechanical stretch is part of the fabric construction, a feature that may matter when reaching, climbing, or layering.
- Weight: Outdoor Research lists the men’s jacket at 13.7 oz (388 g). Its listed center-back length is 29.5 in (74.9 cm).
What the shower test does—and does not—show
The test offers a firsthand editorial observation: under a shower for three minutes, the tester found only a small wet spot near the hood-and-chin gap. It does not establish a standardized waterproof rating, demonstrate performance across different weather conditions, or prove that every wearer will get the same result. Hood adjustment and how the face opening sits are relevant because the reported leak occurred at that interface.
How does it compare with the REI Rainier?
Tom’s Guide reports that both the Foray 3L and the $100 REI Rainier passed its shower test. The article attributes the Foray’s higher cost to its thicker build, fewer seams, water-resistant zippers, and stretchier, more breathable design. That is the article’s comparison, not a controlled head-to-head evaluation of the jackets.

Price and availability
Tom’s Guide listed the Foray 3L at $260 in its October 8, 2026 article, and Outdoor Research’s product page displayed the same price when consulted. The article named REI and Outdoor Research as sellers. Prices and stock can change, so check the current listing before buying.
