Yes. A text can be too long for one SMS segment, but phones often split long SMS messages into linked parts that may appear as one message. Whether they send, how many segments they use, and how they look to the recipient depend on the characters in the text and on the messaging app, carrier, and device. SMS has well-defined per-segment capacities; MMS does not have one universal size limit.
What is the SMS character limit?
An SMS segment can carry up to 140 bytes. The familiar character limits depend on how the text is encoded:

The lower capacity in a concatenated message leaves room for the information used to link its parts. The 153- and 67-character figures apply to each part, not to a universal maximum for an entire long message. A messaging service may set its own overall maximum; for example, AWS documents 1,530 GSM characters or 630 non-GSM characters for its service, not as a general phone or carrier limit (AWS End User Messaging SMS character limits; IETF RFC 5724).
Why can one character make a text use more segments?
SMS capacity is measured in encoded units, not simply by counting what appears on screen. GSM-7 covers common characters, but some characters use extra space: AWS lists ^ { } [ ] ~ | € among characters that consume two septets. A character outside GSM 03.38 may cause the message to use UCS-2 instead, reducing the single-segment capacity from 160 to 70 characters. Emoji often trigger Unicode encoding, although handling can vary by service and device.

AWS illustrates the effect with a 130-character sentence: one curly closing apostrophe makes it two message parts, while replacing it with a standard apostrophe lets it fit in one. If a text unexpectedly counts as multiple messages, check for emoji, smart quotes, accented or non-Latin characters, and GSM extension characters (AWS character limits and encoding examples).
Will a long SMS arrive as one message?
Often, a phone or messaging app joins linked SMS parts and displays them together. That result is not guaranteed: the parts may appear separately or be handled differently by the sender’s app, the carrier, or the recipient’s device. Microsoft notes that carriers and devices can handle long messages differently (Microsoft Azure Communication Services character and rate limits).

If reliable delivery matters and you do not know the recipient’s carrier or device, shorten the text or send it as separate messages. For business or API messaging, use an encoding-aware segment calculator and verify the provider’s limit; a visible-character counter alone may not predict the segment count.

Some messaging apps route a long text through MMS or switch to MMS when media is attached. There is no single MMS text or media size limit that applies to all carriers and devices. Apple documents carrier-provided settings for maximum MMS message size, maximum image size, and the SMS length above which an app should use MMS. Those configuration values explain why the threshold can vary; they do not establish a universal limit (Apple MMSService.Configuration).

MMS also depends on carrier support and the messaging app’s settings. A switch to MMS does not guarantee that an arbitrary-length text will send. Check your carrier’s current MMS support and the app’s SMS/MMS settings if the message changes route or fails.

- Review the text for emoji, curly quotes, accents, non-Latin characters, or GSM extension characters if the segment count is higher than expected.
- Where keeping a message within one GSM-7 segment matters, replace typographic quotes with ordinary apostrophes and remove characters that require a different encoding.
- Shorten or split a long text when the recipient’s carrier and device behavior are unknown.
- If the app switches to MMS or sending fails, check the app’s messaging settings and confirm MMS support and size limits with the carrier.
Microsoft recommends keeping SMS messages to 320 characters and reducing accents “to ensure maximum delivery.” That is guidance for Azure Communication Services, not a universal SMS limit or a delivery guarantee (Microsoft Azure Communication Services character and rate limits).
