Yes, in a reported AWS CodeBuild experiment, Tetragon enforced a policy that killed /usr/bin/curl when it tried to connect to an address outside 127.0.0.0/8. The curl command came from a dependency’s postinstall script during npm ci. The test shows that this specific policy condition can stop a matching process in the reported setup; it does not show that Tetragon identified a malicious package or sandboxed all network activity from npm.
What the CodeBuild experiment demonstrated
Atsushi Suzuki’s experiment used an application and a custom dependency. When the application ran npm ci, the dependency’s postinstall script invoked /usr/bin/curl. A Node.js HTTP server on port 18080, running on the same CodeBuild runner, recorded a fixed dummy value if the request arrived. The demonstration did not send malware or credentials to an Internet host.
The reported results were:
| Run mode | Policy connection events | curl result | Dummy value received |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline | 0 | Exit 0 | Yes |
| Observe | 1 | Exit 0 | Yes |
| Enforce | 1 | Terminated by SIGKILL | No |
These are results reported for that experiment, not an independent reproduction or a general performance or effectiveness benchmark. In the enforce run, curl was killed and the receiver recorded no request. The workflow treated this simulated block as a successful test outcome.
What the policy matches—and what it does not
The experiment’s tracing policy matched the tcp_connect function, selected the /usr/bin/curl binary, excluded loopback destinations, and applied the Sigkill action. In practical terms, the condition was: kill this curl process when it attempts a connection outside 127.0.0.0/8.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is an explicit rule, not a maliciousness detector. It does not establish that the policy knows the process was started by npm, and it is not a complete network sandbox for npm or its child processes. A legitimate curl download to a non-loopback address would match and be blocked too. Suzuki identifies tracing process ancestry and narrowing the rule to curl processes launched specifically from npm as future work.
Tetragon’s official getting-started guide documents tracing-policy enforcement, including terminating a selected process with SIGKILL to block external TCP connections. Its example concerns Kubernetes; it supports Tetragon’s general enforcement capability, not CodeBuild compatibility on its own.

Reported CodeBuild setup and important caveats
For the experiment, Suzuki reports using the aws/codebuild/amazonlinux-x86_64-standard:5.0 image, the LINUX_KERNEL_6 host kernel setting, and privileged mode. The article says privileged mode allowed Tetragon to load and attach eBPF programs and that BTF type information was available in the selected Linux 6 environment. Tetragon was started during CodeBuild’s PRE_BUILD phase, before the GitHub Actions job.
Those are the author’s reported environment details, not a guarantee that the same configuration is available or supported for every current CodeBuild project or runner type. AWS buildspecs define ordered phases; the AWS buildspec reference describes pre_build as work before the build and gives dependency installation as an example. Suzuki also reports using Environment.HostKernel and a buildspec-override:true workflow label for the hosted GitHub Actions runner configuration. Verify current AWS support, kernel selection, runner type, and privileges for your project before relying on those implementation details.

How to apply the result safely
- Confirm the environment first. Check that your specific CodeBuild project or runner supports the required kernel configuration, privileged operation, and eBPF attachment. Do not assume the reported Linux 6 setup is universally available.
- Start with observation. Record the matching connection events and compare them with ordinary build behavior before enforcing a rule. In the reported test, observe mode recorded an event but still allowed curl and the dummy request.
- Scope the policy to the behavior you intend to stop. The demonstrated condition targets
/usr/bin/curlconnecting beyond loopback. It may also block legitimate downloads, and it does not by itself restrict every network-capable process started during installation. - Validate both the block and its side effects. In a controlled test, check that the matching process is terminated and that the intended destination receives no request. Also verify that normal dependency installation and required build downloads still work.
The experiment is useful evidence that Tetragon can enforce a selected eBPF tracing-policy condition in one reported CodeBuild environment. It is not evidence that the policy detects compromised dependencies, prevents every form of CI network egress, or will work unchanged in every current AWS configuration.
