Sometimes, but there is no single nationwide rule. Whether a teacher may offer extra credit for donations depends on the school district’s grading and fundraising policies, applicable state rules, and educator ethics requirements. Before announcing an activity, check current local policy and get administrative approval. A student’s grade should not depend on whether the student or family can or will donate.

Why the answer depends on the school system

Rules can come from district policy, state education requirements, or public-employee ethics law. The examples below apply only to the named jurisdictions; they do not establish a rule for every school.

For example, Provo City School District Policy 6110, modified June 19, 2025, states: “Participation in or non-participation in group fundraising cannot impact a student’s grade.” That is a Provo district policy, not a nationwide standard. Read Provo City School District Policy 6110.

Why donation-based extra credit raises a fairness concern

If students earn academic credit only by donating money or goods, students whose families cannot contribute—or choose not to—may be disadvantaged. That is a fairness concern based on how the offer works, not a legal conclusion established for every jurisdiction.

KYODOLED Clear Donation Box With Lock & Slot, Acrylic Raffle Box & Tip Jar
  • 【Raffle Ticket Box with 4 x 0.4-Inch Slot】 The top slot is precision-sized for raffle tickets, voting slips, and paper notes, so entries drop in cleanly without jamming at school raffles and contests. Fold or trim oversized slips first and the line keeps moving. Check your insert sizes before the event
  • 【Shatter-Resistant Acrylic, See-Through Body】 Crystal-clear acrylic walls keep every bill and ticket in plain view, so donors watch their gift drop in and land, and you can check the collection level at a glance without opening the lid. The shatter-resistant body survives busy events, stays light enough to move between tables, and wipes clean for reuse
  • 【4 x 6-Inch Sign Holder for Any Event】 The built-in holder fits standard 4 x 6-inch paper or cards. Swap the insert to relabel the box as a tip jar, tip box, suggestion box, ballot box, raffle box, or a go-to among donation boxes for fundraising events and giveaways. No tools needed; display cards are not included
  • 【Donation Box with Lock and 2 Keys】 The keyed lock keeps collected cash and tickets secure while you step away from the table or between pickups. Two keys are included, one for the organizer and one spare. Seat the lid fully before locking
  • 【Compact 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0-Inch Countertop Size】 Measuring 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0 inches, it fits bake sales, office front desks, concession stands, reception counters, and service stations without crowding your display space, yet holds plenty for steady collections

A safer approach is to tie extra credit to an academic task rather than a donation or fundraising participation. If a school permits an activity connected to fundraising, ask the principal or district administrator whether an equivalent no-cost option is required and confirm that participation or non-participation cannot affect grades.

Check the rules before soliciting donations

Search the current district policy manual for grading, extra credit, fundraising, donations, student incentives, charitable solicitations, gifts, and staff ethics. Ask an administrator to identify the applicable policy and approve the activity before students are asked to contribute.

State rules may require districts to adopt their own controls. Utah State Board of Education rule R277-113, for example, requires local education agencies to maintain policies addressing fundraising, student participation and incentives, donation approval, and internal controls. It is a Utah framework, not a rule for other states. Read Utah rule R277-113.

Approval and staff participation rules can be specific. Tulsa Public Schools Policy 5706 says student charitable donation drives must be approved by the superintendent or designee and that teachers cannot be involved in approved fundraising during contract time. Those limits apply to Tulsa Public Schools; other districts may set different rules. Review Tulsa Public Schools policies.

Consider educator ethics and conflicts of interest

A donation intended for a school or charity can still raise ethics questions if a teacher personally receives something of value or if a contribution is connected to the teacher’s official decisions. The applicable rules vary by jurisdiction.

  • New Jersey: The School Ethics Act bars a school official from accepting a thing of value based on an understanding that it is intended to influence official duties. Read the New Jersey School Ethics Act.
  • Massachusetts: State ethics guidance distinguishes gifts to public employees from gifts to public agencies and notes that a district may impose additional rules. Read Massachusetts guidance on gifts to public school teachers and staff.
  • Ohio: The Ohio Ethics Commission’s public-school toolkit advises employees generally to assume outside sources may not augment public salaries for authorized duties. It distinguishes a voluntary gift to a district from payment to an employee and addresses limits on donor control of district decisions. Read the Ohio public school ethics toolkit.

Use approved channels to receive and record donations

Before collecting money or goods, confirm who may receive them, where money must be deposited, what approvals are needed, and how the donation must be recorded. Do not route school-related funds through a personal account unless local policy explicitly authorizes that arrangement.

A practical checklist for teachers

  1. Find the current local rules. Review district and state requirements on grading, extra credit, fundraising, student incentives, donations, gifts, and staff ethics.
  2. Ask for approval before announcing the activity. Confirm who may authorize it and whether solicitation is allowed during school or contract time.
  3. Keep grades independent of contributions. Do not make extra credit depend on a student’s donation or fundraising participation; ask about an equivalent no-cost academic option.
  4. Clarify how donations will be handled. Use the approved recipient and process for acceptance, deposit, receipts, and records.
  5. Check for ethics or conflict concerns. Do not personally accept money or benefits tied to official duties, and follow district guidance on donor restrictions.
