Valve says Steam Frame Controllers can control non-VR games through Steam Input, but the claimed Portal 2 and Halo Infinite benchmark has not been verified. The available evidence supports general 2D-game control use and a reported standalone Steam Frame rating for Portal 2; it does not establish that either game was benchmarked with separate controllers, or disclose test results.
Can Steam Frame Controllers play non-VR games?
Yes, Valve documents support for playing non-VR content on Steam Frame. The controllers offer standard gamepad capabilities alongside touch states, grip buttons, capacitive finger tracking and six-degree-of-freedom spatial tracking. Valve says: “It also allows users to play non-VR content on the headset without a separate device.”
For non-VR games played locally or streamed from a PC, the controllers use Steam Input. Depending on the selected bindings, a game can receive input as a generic gamepad or as keyboard and mouse. That describes a general input path, not confirmed compatibility with every game.

What is known about Portal 2 on Steam Frame?
PCGamesN reported on June 30, 2026, that Portal 2 had a standalone Steam Frame rating of Playable. The report says the default controller configuration and button glyphs worked, and describes the graphics settings and interface text as acceptable. It also says Portal 2 did not support the headset’s native resolution. These are details attributed to that report, not results from the alleged controller benchmark.

Valve’s standalone compatibility review concerns games running locally on the headset; the process excludes games streamed from a PC. Its stated 2D performance floor is 30 fps at 1280 × 720 during normal play, and the default controller configuration must provide access to all content. Those are rating criteria, not Portal 2 benchmark measurements.

Was Halo Infinite benchmarked with the controllers?
The available sources do not establish whether Halo Infinite was tested on Steam Frame, whether it ran locally or streamed from a PC, whether the headset was worn, or what controller mapping or results were recorded. They therefore cannot confirm its compatibility, playability, performance, input latency or anti-cheat behavior on the device.
Steam lists both Portal 2 and Halo Infinite, but those store pages do not substantiate the specific Frame-controller tests. Without the original tester’s method and results, the title’s claim that the games were benchmarked remains unverified.

What would a useful benchmark need to clarify?
A result would be meaningful only with enough setup detail to distinguish several different experiences:
- Where the game runs: locally on Steam Frame or streamed from a PC.
- How it is viewed: on a virtual screen inside the headset or on another display.
- How the controllers are used: with the headset worn or paired separately, if that is supported.
- Which input mapping is active: the default Steam Input layout or a custom mapping.
- What is measured: frame rate and frame-time consistency, input latency, ergonomics and setup or compatibility issues.
None of those test details or benchmark results is established for the Portal 2 and Halo Infinite claim.
