Yes—but not gold from beans. A 2008 laboratory study used soybean extract to help convert gold salts into gold nanoparticles and stabilize the resulting particles. The work was a materials-chemistry experiment, not a way to make ordinary gold at home or evidence that the particles are safe or effective as a medical treatment.
What “soybeans strike nanogold” means
“Soybeans strike nanogold” was the headline of a Chemistry World report published on 6 November 2007. The phrase is shorthand for a laboratory synthesis: researchers combined gold salts with soybean extract to produce nanoscale gold particles. The gold came from the gold salts; soybeans supplied compounds that helped make and coat the particles.
The peer-reviewed soybean study appeared the following year. Shukla and colleagues published “Soybeans as a Phytochemical Reservoir for the Production and Stabilization of Biocompatible Gold Nanoparticles” in Small, volume 4, issue 9, pages 1425–1436. Wiley lists its first publication date as 1 September 2008, and PubMed records it as published in September 2008. Wiley’s article record and the PubMed record identify the study and its abstract.
How soybean extract helped make the particles
The paper describes antioxidant phytochemicals in soy as reducing agents: they help convert gold ions in the salts into metallic gold. Soybean proteins and other phytochemicals also associate with the newly formed particles, helping stabilize them. In other words, the extract was reported to contribute to both particle formation and surface coating.

- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

The authors called the approach a “green process,” but that describes the use of a biological extract in a synthesis method; it does not mean the method requires no hazardous materials, that it is suitable for household use, or that the resulting nanoparticles are harmless.
What the experiments established—and what they did not
The study reported in vitro stability tests in buffers and solutions that included saline, histidine, human serum albumin (HSA), and cysteine. It also reported results from an MTT assay, a laboratory test commonly used to assess cell metabolic activity. These findings describe behavior under the study’s experimental conditions. They do not establish safety in people, clinical benefit, or a safe dose.

A patent record titled “Soy or lentil stabilized gold nanoparticles and method for making same” documents patent claims related to the approach. A patent is not proof that a product is commercially available, clinically approved, or medically effective. The US patent record is a record of the filing and claims, not evidence of those outcomes.

Why gum arabic appears in the 2007 story
The Chemistry World article also refers to research on gold nanoparticles stabilized with gum arabic. That is a separate study, not the soybean-extract paper. The gum-arabic paper, published in February 2007, examined in vivo pharmacokinetics and X-ray contrast imaging; those details should not be attributed to the 2008 soybean study. PubMed’s record for the gum-arabic study distinguishes the publication.

Can you make nanogold from soybeans at home?
No practical home recipe follows from this research. The study used soybean extract together with gold salts and laboratory methods. Dried soybeans alone cannot produce gold, and the article does not establish a safe consumer procedure for handling the reagents or characterizing the resulting nanomaterial. Do not treat the reported synthesis as a kitchen experiment or use any resulting material as a supplement or medical product.
