Generally, yes: SingleFile saves a captured page and its available resources as one HTML file that can be opened offline, and it is designed to retain the page’s visual layout. But the file is a copy of that page, not a complete offline copy of the site. Links may still need internet access, and JavaScript-driven features may not work.
What SingleFile preserves—and what it does not
SingleFile captures the current page and can incorporate resources such as stylesheets, images, fonts, and frames into the saved HTML. The project says the saved page can be displayed offline in a browser without installing the extension. SingleFile’s official site describes its capture and browser support.
That makes it useful as a portable, readable copy of a page. It does not mean that every resource will always be available, that the appearance will be pixel-perfect, or that the page’s original interactive behavior will be preserved.
Links are references, not automatically archived destinations
A link can remain in the saved page, but clicking it does not mean its destination was saved too. Unless you separately capture the linked page, opening that destination generally still requires a network connection. SingleFile offers options involving selected links and multiple tabs, but its documentation does not promise recursive capture of every page reachable from a link.

Layout depends on resources the capture can retrieve
When SingleFile can obtain the page’s styles, images, fonts, and frames, it can include them in the single-file copy and preserve much of the recognizable layout. Missing or protected resources can change the result. For example, the FAQ says some sites require a Referer header to fetch hotlink-protected images; passing that header after a cross-origin request error may help, but the option is off by default for privacy reasons.
Interactivity is different from appearance
SingleFile removes scripts by default because they can change rendering and are not guaranteed to work offline. That means a page may look largely intact while features such as folding titles, dynamic maps, menus, or carousels do not function. Settings can allow scripts or retain more raw page content, but enabling them does not guarantee an offline working version.

How to make and check an offline copy
- Open the page and let it finish loading. The Chrome listing advises waiting until the page is fully loaded before saving. This matters especially for content that appears after the initial load.
- Use SingleFile’s options for deferred content if needed. The project lists options to load deferred images and iframes before capture. If the page relies on late-loading content, enable the relevant option before saving.
- Save the page with SingleFile. The extension is available for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, and a command-line version is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux; check the official site for current installation options.
- Test the saved HTML offline. Disconnect from the internet, open the file in a browser, and inspect the particular images, layout, links, and interactions you need. This practical check is the best way to find missing resources or features that depend on a live site.
On Chrome, extensions cannot access local files by default. To show SingleFile’s infobar on saved pages or save a page already on your filesystem, enable Chrome’s Allow access to file URLs permission for the extension.
Troubleshooting missing content or behavior
- Images are missing: Confirm they loaded before capture. If the site protects images from hotlinking, SingleFile’s FAQ suggests enabling the option to pass the Referer header after a cross-origin request error. This may help on some sites, but the setting changes what information is sent with the request.
- Lazy images or frames are absent: Use the options to load deferred images and iframes before capture, then save again.
- A map, carousel, menu, or other feature does not respond: It may depend on JavaScript or live services. You can try allowing scripts; the FAQ also describes settings related to hidden elements, unused styles, and raw page content. These changes may affect the saved output and are not reliable fixes for offline functionality.
- The saved page looks incomplete: Check whether the original page had finished loading and whether its resources were available to the browser. A resource the capture could not retrieve cannot be reliably preserved in the file.
- The extension does not show its infobar on a local file in Chrome: Enable Allow access to file URLs in the extension’s settings.
- A saved link opens nothing useful offline: The linked destination was not necessarily captured. Save that destination separately if you need it available without internet access.
When a single HTML file is not enough
SingleFile is suited to portable captures of individual pages. Its own FAQ says it is not a tool used by professional web archivists, who prefer WARC-based tools. If you need a managed collection or broader preservation workflow, evaluate WARC-based archiving rather than treating a standalone HTML capture as a complete site archive.

SingleFile says the work is performed in the browser and that it does not upload data to third-party servers. It also notes that it may download page resources that are not displayed or already cached but are present in the page. That is the project’s description of its operation, not a guarantee about every browser, site, or privacy circumstance.
Version and availability
The Chrome Web Store listing showed version 1.28.0, updated October 2, 2026, when checked October 3, 2026. That version detail applies to the Chrome listing only, not necessarily to other browser stores. Check the official project site for current installation options.
