Selenium documents a full-document screenshot operation for Firefox WebDriver. Capybara’s page.save_screenshot delegates to the active driver, so it may produce only the viewport unless that driver supports and receives a full-page option. In a Capybara session using Selenium and Firefox, call the underlying Firefox driver’s full-page method explicitly and verify the resulting image.
What “full-page” means
A normal browser screenshot is the currently visible viewport. A full-page screenshot includes the document below the fold, often producing an image much taller than the browser window. These operations are different: a binding can support viewport capture while lacking a full-document implementation.
Selenium’s documented full-page route is notably available through Firefox WebDriver. Capybara does not implement one browser-independent screenshot engine; its screenshot method asks the configured driver to perform the capture. Therefore, the browser, Selenium binding, driver version and execution environment all matter.
Selenium full-page screenshots with Firefox
Python
With Selenium’s Firefox driver, use save_full_page_screenshot rather than the ordinary viewport method:

To obtain image bytes instead of writing directly to disk, use the full-page screenshot API exposed by the installed Python binding and decode its returned base64 value as documented for your Selenium version. The consulted Selenium Python documentation identifies version 4.49.0; bindings and signatures can change, so check the version installed in your project.

In Java, FirefoxDriver implements HasFullPageScreenshot. Call getFullPageScreenshotAs and select an output target:

}The exact output conversion depends on the Selenium Java version and the OutputType overload you choose. Keep the cast and method call tied to Firefox; do not assume every WebDriver implements this interface.
Ruby
Selenium Ruby’s ordinary screenshot API defaults to the viewport. It accepts full_page: true only where the current driver supports it, and the Firefox full-page extension is documented as a private API. Verify your installed gem and browser combination before relying on it:

Does Capybara’s save_screenshot capture the entire page?
Not necessarily. Capybara’s page.save_screenshot(path, **options) delegates to save_screenshot on the configured driver. Capybara’s own documentation describes screenshot support as driver-dependent; it does not promise full-page output for every driver.

Full-page capture with Capybara and Selenium Firefox
When the session uses Selenium Firefox, reach the underlying browser object and invoke its Firefox full-page method. The exact object exposure can vary by Capybara and Selenium versions:

Making captures reliable
Wait for the page state you need
Navigate, then wait for a meaningful application condition—such as a results container, a known heading or completion of an AJAX update—before capturing. A full-page operation can faithfully capture a page that is still loading, so “full page” does not mean “fully rendered.”

Account for lazy content
Images or sections loaded only after scrolling may not exist when the screenshot starts. Trigger the application’s intended lazy-loading behavior, wait for the assets, and then capture. For deterministic tests, use stable fixtures or explicit readiness markers.
Check dimensions and artifacts
- Open the output and verify that its height includes content below the fold.
- Check that fixed headers, sticky banners and overlays are present or hidden as intended.
- Use unique filenames in parallel tests to avoid one session overwriting another.
- Preserve browser and driver logs when a capture fails; the screenshot is often the symptom, not the cause.
Control session conditions
Use a fixed viewport, locale, timezone and test data when comparing images. Headless and headed modes can differ in font availability, GPU behavior and timing. A remote browser can also have different installed fonts or network access from a local machine.

The image is only viewport-sized
Cause: the ordinary screenshot method was called, or the active driver ignored an unsupported full-page option. Fix: use Firefox’s explicit Selenium method, inspect the underlying Capybara browser object, and verify output dimensions.
undefined method save_full_page_screenshot (Ruby)
Cause: the configured driver is not Selenium Firefox, or the installed Ruby binding does not expose that method publicly. Fix: print the driver class, check the installed Selenium version’s API, and use the documented extension only when that exact version supports it.
Java cast or method errors
Cause: the session is not a FirefoxDriver that implements HasFullPageScreenshot, or Selenium artifacts are on incompatible versions. Fix: align Selenium components, confirm the concrete driver, and do not cast an unrelated driver to the full-page interface.

Capybara cannot find the browser object
Cause: a custom driver wrapper hides the Selenium instance. Fix: expose a deliberate helper in the driver registration, or implement a driver-level screenshot method that invokes the browser API internally.

Blank, incomplete or stale content
Cause: capture began before navigation, JavaScript, fonts or lazy images completed. Fix: wait on an application-specific selector, remove transient overlays, verify network access and capture after the page reaches its tested ready state.
It works locally but not on Grid
Cause: browser, driver, Selenium server or provider capabilities differ. Fix: record all versions and capabilities, reproduce with the same Firefox image, and confirm that the remote endpoint supports the full-page command. The available API documentation does not establish universal behavior for every Grid or cloud provider.

Full-page images can be much larger than viewport images. Large documents increase encoding time, memory use and artifact-storage costs, especially when a test suite captures every failure and every step. Capture on failure or at explicit checkpoints rather than after every assertion unless visual regression requires otherwise.
PNG preserves text and sharp UI edges but is larger; JPEG is smaller with lossy compression where supported by your surrounding tooling. Keep image comparisons on the same browser, operating-system fonts and device scale to reduce noise. A full-page command is not a substitute for accessibility checks, DOM assertions or component-level visual tests.

Does a full-page screenshot include content hidden behind tabs?
No. It captures rendered document content, not interface states that have not been opened. Activate the tab or state you need before capturing.
Can I use Capybara’s screenshot path configuration with Selenium’s method?
Yes. Keep Capybara’s save_path for organizing artifacts, then pass the resulting path to the underlying Selenium method. The method itself remains a Selenium/driver operation.
