Dated screenshots can show how a Google Search results page (SERP) looked at particular moments. They are evidence of what appeared in those captures—not proof, by themselves, of a universal Google change, when a rollout began, why the page changed, or whether rankings moved.
What a Google search screenshot can—and cannot—show
A screenshot preserves the visible presentation of a rendered search page at one time and in one context. Comparing dated images can reveal that page elements, their order, or their positions differed between captures. It can also help document the presence or absence of features such as Featured Snippets, Local Packs, Top Stories, People Also Ask, or carousels.
Google says a result can look different depending on whether the search is viewed on desktop or phone, the country, the query language, and other factors. See Google’s Visual Elements gallery. Therefore, two different-looking screenshots establish a difference between those captures; they do not isolate its cause or establish that every searcher saw the same change.
- Supported by the images: what is visibly present and where it appears in each captured page.
- Not established by the images alone: whether Google rolled out a universal redesign, when a change started, why it happened, or whether organic rankings changed.
How to compare Google SERP screenshots fairly
Record the capture context alongside each image. Match conditions where possible and label anything unknown; an uncontrolled comparison is still useful, but it should not be presented as a controlled before-and-after test.

When contexts do not match, say so directly. For example: “The later capture uses a phone viewport and a different location, so the images show different presentations but do not identify what caused the difference.”
Can you see what Google search results looked like in the past?
Sometimes. The Internet Archive’s captures have been used in published studies of historical search interfaces, but they are not a complete record of every query, location, device, or user experience. A missing or partial archived page cannot establish what the entire SERP looked like.

A 2023 study, “The Evolution of Web Search User Interfaces — An Archaeological Analysis of Google Search Engine Result Pages”, sampled Internet Archive SERPs and analyzed changes in content, layout, design, navigation, and file size. Its method visually reviewed screenshots from a monthly sample and selected a capture with the most features for each month represented in its primary dataset. The authors report that interface area increased as features added content; sample selection and gaps in archived captures limit how broadly that trend can be generalized.
A separate 2023 study, “From 10 Blue Links Pages to Feature-Full Search Engine Results Pages”, examined sampled archived Google and Bing SERPs. It describes growing feature diversity and more direct-answer elements, including Featured Snippets, Local Packs, Top Stories, People Also Ask, and carousels. This is historical evidence from sampled pages, not a census of all results served.

The University of Porto poster for that study reports more than 7,000 interfaces analyzed over 20 years: 5,653 Google interfaces and 2,267 Bing interfaces. These are study sample counts, not counts of all SERPs either search engine served. See the 2023 University of Porto research poster.
How to check whether Google reported a related update
Use the Google Search Status Dashboard to look for reported Search incidents and updates. Google’s dashboard help page says its Summary and History pages provide five years of issues and updates. A matching entry can provide official context; no entry does not prove that no user-visible presentation change occurred.

Keep update types distinct. Danny Sullivan, Google’s Public Liaison for Search, said in 2021 that Google Search is updated “thousands of times a year” to improve the experience and quality of results. That describes Search updates broadly, not a count of SERP redesigns (Google, June 2, 2021).
A visible change also need not mean a ranking change. On June 12, 2025, Google Search Central announced it would phase out support for several structured-data features, so some visual enhancements would no longer appear for some results. The announcement said the update would not affect how pages were ranked (Google Search Central, June 12, 2025).

Capture a new comparison consistently
For a useful manual record, run the same query with the same search mode and, as far as possible, the same location, language, device, browser, and viewport. Save the screenshot with its capture time and context. If you use an archive, record that provenance rather than treating it as a live capture. Compare the visible modules and their positions separately from the text and order of organic listings.

Common interpretation mistakes
- Calling a difference a redesign: first check whether device, viewport, query, location, or language changed.
- Calling a module change a ranking change: compare organic listings separately from SERP features and their screen positions.
- Treating an archived page as complete: archived captures can be missing or partial; state that limitation.
- Using dashboard silence as proof nothing changed: the dashboard documents reported issues and updates, not every visual variation experienced by users.
- Generalizing from a sample: historical studies describe the pages they sampled, not every query or searcher’s SERP.
