Potentially, but it is not a guaranteed building-wide cooling fix. Reflective cementitious materials can bounce more sunlight away from a sunlit surface, reducing the solar energy that surface absorbs. Some engineered composites also emit heat as infrared radiation or use evaporation. How much that changes a roof, room, or building depends on the material, exposure, durability, and building assembly.
What “reflective cement” means
“Reflective cement” is a broad description, not a universal retail product category. It usually refers to cement-based concrete, tiles, or composites formulated to reflect more incoming sunlight. In some research, the material is also engineered to release heat through mid-infrared radiation or to cool through evaporation.
Solar reflectance, also called albedo, is the share of incoming solar radiation a surface reflects. A higher-reflectance surface can absorb less solar energy when exposed to sunlight. That is a material-level effect; it does not by itself establish a particular indoor temperature or energy-bill reduction.
How the cooling mechanisms work
Reflecting sunlight
Color, ingredients, and microstructure influence how much sunlight a cementitious surface reflects. In a 2002 study of 32 Portland cement concrete mixes, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory reported that concrete albedo was related to cement and sand albedo, and, after abrasion, to rock albedo. Cement albedo had a disproportionately strong influence on the concrete’s reflectance. The study record also reports that reflectance rose as hydration progressed and stabilized within six weeks of casting.

Emitting heat and evaporating water
Radiative-cooling materials are designed to reflect sunlight while emitting heat in the mid-infrared atmospheric window. Some cementitious composites combine this with evaporation. These mechanisms depend on formulation and pore structure; they are not features to assume in ordinary cement.
In the 2021 study, the authors examined how surface whiteness, microscale pores, and titanium dioxide particle diameter affect visible and near-infrared reflectance. Their tested composite had reported solar reflectance of 82 ± 2 percent and mid-infrared emissivity of 87 ± 2 percent, and produced a 12°C inner-temperature drop in a field test. Those are results for that material and test, not a forecast for a building. The study does not establish a universal room-temperature or energy-saving outcome.

A 2023 experimental study explored the interaction of reflection, radiative emission, and evaporation. It reports a tested composite with solar reflectance of 0.90 and atmospheric-window emissivity of 0.88, along with a reported surface-cooling result of 17.3°C and internal cooling attributed to the combined mechanisms. The authors also examined calcite, calcium-silicate-hydrate phases, water-to-powder ratio, particle size, and pore size. These are study-specific results, not expected performance for generic cement. The Eindhoven University of Technology record describes the tested composite.

A 2025 metasurface-enhanced cement study reported solar reflectance of 96.2 percent and mid-infrared emissivity of 96.0 percent. Its experimental result was a 5.4°C temperature drop at a stated midday solar intensity of 850 watts per square metre. These measurements describe the experiment, not a whole building or a commercially available product. The study does not establish that the formulation is available to buy.

Why results vary after installation
Reflectance can change as a surface hydrates, weathers, gets dirty, or wears down. In the 2002 LBNL study, simulated weathering, soiling, and abrasion generally reduced average albedo, though some individual samples behaved differently. The six-week stabilization finding and exposure results apply to the mixes and conditions studied; they should not be treated as a universal aging curve for every product.
For an installed surface, local climate, orientation, shade, rainfall, dust, abrasion, and the surrounding building assembly all matter. A laboratory specimen or outdoor field test cannot be translated directly into a percentage reduction in cooling costs or a promised indoor temperature. Building-level performance would need to be established for the specific material and building conditions.

Where cool cementitious materials may be used
Potential applications discussed in the literature include roofs, cement-based façade tiles, paving blocks, and pervious pavements. An American Society of Civil Engineers review describes cool cementitious materials for urban environments and identifies durability evaluation as a relevant consideration.

How to evaluate a material for a project
- Match the intended use. Confirm that the product is designed and approved for the roof, façade, pavement, or other surface in question.
- Check comparable measurements. Ask for solar reflectance and, if radiative cooling is claimed, infrared emissivity. Look for the test method, exposure conditions, and whether measurements are from a specimen, an outdoor test, or an occupied building.
- Review durability evidence. Seek results relevant to weathering, dirt, abrasion, and any freeze-thaw or chemical exposure expected at the site.
- Confirm project requirements. Follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance and applicable structural, product, and local-code requirements.
- Keep performance claims in scope. A high reflectance or a temperature drop measured on a test sample does not establish whole-building energy savings.
Will white cement or added pigment deliver the same effect?
No result in these studies establishes that generic white Portland cement or a standalone pigment will reproduce the performance of a purpose-designed cooling composite. The 2023 study record notes that Aalborg White supplied white cement and Chemours supplied titanium dioxide samples; the 2021 study discusses white surfaces and titanium dioxide particle diameter as factors. Those details show that ingredients matter, but the tested performance belongs to the complete formulations and conditions—not to an ingredient in isolation.
