No. Random User-Agent could change one browser-reported signal, but it could not hide your identity or guarantee anonymity. A 2017 report described the extension as rotating or manually changing Chrome’s User-Agent string; that account does not establish the extension’s current features, safety, or availability.
What a User-Agent tells websites
A User-Agent (UA) is information a browser sends to a website to identify aspects of the browser application and its environment. Historically, the string could include detailed platform, device, and browser-version information, making it one possible ingredient in browser fingerprinting. Supporting browsers now reduce some of those details by default. MDN’s guide to User-Agent reduction explains which information is limited.
Changing that string affects only that signal. Websites may also use other browser APIs to gather information that contributes to a fingerprint, so a different UA does not make a visitor anonymous.
What Random User-Agent was reported to do
In an article published April 5, 2017, BetaNews writer Mike Williams described Random User-Agent as a free Chrome extension that could switch the UA string on a schedule or on demand. The article said its default interval was ten minutes, that users could adjust the interval, and that they could set exceptions for matching websites. It also described a default mode that kept Chrome while changing version and operating-system identifiers, with broader emulation choices available. These are historical descriptions, not verified current controls. Read the 2017 BetaNews account.

Why changing the string can cause problems
If a browser reports a version, operating system, or device that does not match its actual capabilities, a website may deliver an incompatible page or experience. A switcher changes the UA string; that alone does not establish that related request headers or JavaScript-visible signals have changed to match it.
Web developers are encouraged to avoid relying solely on UA parsing and, where suitable, use feature detection, progressive enhancement, or responsive design. Those approaches do not guarantee that every site behaves that way. Chrome for Developers’ explanation of User-Agent Client Hints discusses alternatives and the request mechanism for device information.

How User-Agent reduction and Client Hints fit in
User-Agent reduction limits certain details in the UA string, including exact platform or operating-system version, device model, and minor browser version. This is a browser-level change to what is disclosed by default; it is distinct from using an extension to substitute a different string.
Client Hints provide a mechanism for a server to request additional browser or device details. As MDN’s Client Hints guide explains, supporting browsers can provide information in response to a request. Therefore, a reduced UA string does not mean that no additional information can be requested. Nor does a UA switcher demonstrate that it overrides Client Hints or other browser APIs.

What is known about the extension today
A Chrome Web Store page exists for Random User-Agent (Switcher), but the available listing information does not establish its current publisher, version, permissions, privacy practices, update history, or actual behavior. A promotional page describes automatic switching and privacy benefits, but that marketing is not independent evidence that the extension makes users safer. FlashID’s promotional page should be read in that context.
MajorGeeks listed Random User-Agent for Chrome and Firefox as version 4.3.2 in an entry dated July 9, 2025. That is dated third-party corroboration, not confirmation of the extension’s current official listing or status. See the MajorGeeks entry.
