Quicklime does not detect HIV by itself. In a 2012 study, calcium oxide (quicklime) reacted with water to produce heat for an experimental test that amplified HIV-1 genetic material. The approach was a research platform with potential for point-of-care use—not a consumer HIV test or a product established as available to buy.
How does a chemical heater work for rapid HIV testing?
The heater supplies warmth for reverse-transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification, or RT-LAMP. This method amplifies HIV-1 nucleic acid at a steady temperature; the chemical reaction between calcium oxide and water provides that heat without relying on a conventional laboratory thermal cycler.
Curtis and colleagues’ 2012 study, described in the CDC Stacks record, reported stable temperatures during amplification and consistent results among three separate chemical heaters and a thermal cycler. The researchers also evaluated the method using whole-blood specimens from people with HIV-1.
The authors concluded that RT-LAMP paired with a chemical heater offered a portable, rapid and robust nucleic-acid amplification platform with potential for HIV-1 testing in resource-limited settings and point-of-care environments. That is the study authors’ conclusion, not evidence of regulatory approval or proof of broad clinical accuracy. The CDC record does not provide a generalizable sensitivity or specificity figure for the approach.

Can quicklime detect HIV?
No. Quicklime is a heat source in this experiment, not the part that recognizes HIV. Detection depends on the RT-LAMP reaction amplifying HIV-1 nucleic acid. Quicklime or a calcium oxide product on its own cannot test a specimen for HIV.
Is this the same as a rapid HIV antibody test?
No. The study’s experimental approach looks for HIV-1 nucleic acid, while rapid antibody tests look for antibodies produced by the body. The FDA’s OraQuick Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test listing describes detection of HIV-1/2 antibodies in plasma and HIV-1 antibodies in oral fluid. OraQuick is a separate test; the listing does not connect it to quicklime or chemical heating.

Heat can also appear in research about rapid tests for a different reason: a 2011 study examined how storage heat affected seven rapid HIV antibody assays. Its findings concern test-kit stability under heat exposure, not heat as a way to detect HIV.
Is quicklime HIV testing available to buy?
The cited study and regulatory listing do not establish an approved or consumer-ready HIV test based on quicklime heating. A quicklime listing would supply a chemical, not a validated HIV diagnostic; an antibody rapid test is a different technology. The study supports interest in a portable research platform, but not a claim that readers can assemble or use its components for reliable diagnosis.
