Not as a replacement for a phone or tablet screen. What Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) in Japan has demonstrated is a pattern-defined input surface: a PVC sheet with toner printed on it by a conventional laser printer, which can tell how a finger slides across it and turn that motion into one of a set of preset inputs. The sheet itself has no wiring or electrodes. The results so far come from laboratory tests reported by the team in 2026.
What the sheet is and how it senses touch
The interface is made in two steps. A laser printer deposits toner in a geometric pattern on a PVC sheet. When a finger slides across the surface, it passes alternately over toner-covered areas and bare PVC. Friction between skin and the two materials produces a triboelectric charge, and the way that charge builds and reverses depends on where the toner is.
Shigemune, the study leader, describes the mechanism this way: “The toner pattern functions as a geometric mask that controls where the skin directly contacts PVC, thereby controlling the timing and polarity of the potential response.” In practical terms, the printed pattern sets the timing and polarity of the signal, so the same finger movement over a different pattern produces a different signal.
The sheet needs no wiring or electrodes. That does not mean the whole setup is electronics-free. The signal still has to be measured and interpreted by readout electronics, and the public reporting does not describe the hardware used for that step.

What the team reported
The SIT release and the paper’s listing describe the following results. All of them are laboratory demonstrations by the team, and none has been reported as independently replicated.

The seven-participant figure is the only one tied to people, and it is a small group. The 97.1% accuracy figures appear for two different tests, so they should not be read as one combined result.

How it differs from a touchscreen
A New Atlas report on the work describes the system as closer to a programmable gamepad or control strip than to a general-purpose touchscreen. That comparison holds up on four points.

The reconfiguration point is the most distinctive. A printed control surface can be redesigned by changing the pattern rather than the electronics. The trade-off is that each pattern defines a fixed set of inputs, so the sheet cannot follow a pointer or draw freely.

Where it could be used
The team suggests possible applications including wearable controls, IoT devices, keyboards, game controllers, and smartphone operation. These are proposed uses only. The reporting does not describe a commercial product, a shipping version, or a pricing plan.
Printing the pattern: what is and is not established
The SIT release identifies a conventional laser printer but does not name a printer model or a toner brand. A general toner cartridge can therefore be assumed for the pattern step, but no specific product is established as the one used.

The PVC sheet is central to the method, but the reporting does not establish that arbitrary PVC film is safe or compatible with laser printers. Do not feed generic PVC through a printer on the strength of this study. Before trying anything similar, check your printer manufacturer’s media guidance, which lists approved sheet types and temperatures. No consumer PVC substrate or commercial prototyping kit for this method has been verified.

The work is published as “Toner-printed pattern recognition system based on triboelectricity of human body for human-computer interaction” by H. Higoshi, S. Ueno, K. Yamashita, and H. Shigemune in Nano Energy (2026), DOI 10.1016/j.nanoen.2026.112165. SIT reports that the paper became available online on June 27, 2026, and appeared in Nano Energy volume 156 on September 1, 2026. The full methods section was not available for this article, so details such as test conditions, sheet thickness, and printer settings are not described here.

Shigemune has also framed the approach in these terms: “Our approach offers a low-cost, wiring-free platform in which the input function can be changed simply by modifying the printed pattern.” That is the team’s own assessment of its aims, and independent testing would be needed before the cost and reliability claims can be assessed.
What would need to be shown next
The results cover one small group of participants, lab-controlled sliding, and a single PVC-and-toner configuration. The team has indicated it will look at performance under more demanding conditions. Until that work is reported, the sheet should be read as a proof of concept for printed, reconfigurable touch inputs, not as a touchscreen substitute for everyday devices.
