No—not directly as still screenshots. Puppeteer’s documented Page.screenshot() formats are PNG, JPEG, and WebP, with PNG as the default. To get GIF, JP2, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, or SVG, capture a supported image first and use a separate converter or encoder that supports the target format. Changing the filename extension alone does not convert the image. The official Puppeteer reference surfaced for this guide is version 25.12.0; check the reference for the version installed in your project.
Which formats can Puppeteer save directly?
The still-image Page.screenshot() API documents three formats: png, jpeg, and webp. PNG is the default. If you specify a path, Puppeteer saves the image there and infers the screenshot type from the file extension—but that inference operates within supported image formats; it does not add a GIF, JP2, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, or SVG encoder. The API can return image bytes or base64 according to the encoding option. The quality option does not apply to PNG. Use the options documented for the version of Puppeteer installed in your project.
How to capture a supported screenshot
Here is a minimal Node.js example using Puppeteer. It writes a PNG, one of the formats the screenshot API documents:

How to produce an unsupported format
- Capture the page as PNG, JPEG, or WebP with Puppeteer.
- Pass the saved file or returned bytes to a separate image encoder that explicitly documents support for the target format.
- Check that the encoder is available in the environment where your code runs, and confirm the output’s actual format and appearance in the intended destination.
Conversion behavior depends on the separate tool and its runtime: support for a format, options, transparency, color handling, and native dependencies are not established by Puppeteer’s screenshot API. Do not treat a changed file suffix as conversion.

GIF
GIF is not listed as a still screenshot type. Puppeteer lists GIF separately as a video format; that is not documentation that Page.screenshot() produces a GIF still image. Screenshot options · Video format type (the surfaced video reference is version 25.10.0).
JP2, TIFF, AVIF, and HEIF
None appears in the documented still-image format type. Use a separate encoder that supports the particular target format. For AVIF, a Puppeteer project issue records a feature request, but the current API reference’s documented types are the relevant guide to direct screenshot output. SVG
SVG is not a documented screenshot output type. A screenshot captures pixels as raster image data; renaming that image to .svg does not turn it into vector artwork. A separately constructed SVG could embed or wrap raster content, but that is a distinct operation and does not make the screenshot itself vector output.
Choosing a conversion target
There is no universal best format established by Puppeteer’s API documentation. Compare the converted result against the destination and your actual page content.

- Does the system that will consume the image accept the format?
- Does the rendered page retain the visual detail you need?
- What file size does your chosen encoder produce?
- Are transparency and color handled as required?
- Is the target encoder installed and supported in your deployment environment?
These questions require checking the chosen encoder and testing its output; Puppeteer documents screenshot options, not comparative format benchmarks.
Troubleshooting
The file has the requested extension but will not open
A suffix does not prove the data was encoded in that format. Capture using a documented type, then convert with a compatible encoder and verify the resulting file format.

Puppeteer reports an unsupported screenshot type
Use png, jpeg, or webp for the direct screenshot. Then add a separate conversion step for the desired target.
A quality setting has no effect on PNG
The screenshot options documentation says quality does not apply to PNG. Choose an applicable documented format and option, or adjust the separate encoder’s settings after capture.
You need an SVG but only have a screenshot
The screenshot is raster pixel data. An SVG wrapper can contain raster content, but it does not vectorize the page. If the destination requires actual vector graphics, use a workflow that produces vector artwork rather than renaming a screenshot.
