Yes. Publishers can use Google’s page-level nosnippet directive to prevent text snippets and direct-input use of page content in AI Overviews and AI Mode while keeping the page potentially eligible for an ordinary Google Search result. The trade-off: a page that is not eligible to appear with a snippet cannot be a supporting link in an AI Overview.

How to block a page from AI Overviews without deindexing it

Add this tag to the page’s HTML:

<meta name="googlebot" content="nosnippet">

Google also accepts the rule in an X-Robots-Tag HTTP response header, which can be useful for non-HTML files or when you want to configure the directive server-side. Google documents max-snippet:0 as equivalent to nosnippet.

The directive suppresses text snippets across Google Search surfaces and prevents the page’s content from being used as direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not itself tell Google to remove the page from Search results.

What you give up—and what you keep

A page using nosnippet may still appear as a regular Search result, but it cannot qualify as an AI Overview supporting link. Google says supporting links require a page to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Its AI Features and Your Website guidance states: “To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, fulfilling the Search technical requirements.”

Google Pixel 11 Pro - Unlocked Smartphone, Gemini - 256 GB - Obsidian
  • Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
  • Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]

That is the central trade-off: nosnippet preserves potential ordinary Search visibility but gives up snippet previews and eligibility as an AI Overview supporting link.

Choose the right control for your goal

Control Scope and effect Search visibility
nosnippet or max-snippet:0 Page-wide: suppresses text snippets and prevents direct-input use in AI Overviews and AI Mode. The page may remain eligible for ordinary Search results, but not as an AI Overview supporting link.
Positive max-snippet:[number] Page-wide limit on textual snippet length; also limits how much page content can be used directly in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It is not a complete opt-out. Does not itself remove the page from Search.
data-nosnippet Excludes selected text when placed on a valid span, div, or section element around that text. Other page text remains available for snippets; this is not the clearest option for blocking the whole page from AI Overviews.
noindex Prevents the page from appearing in Search results. Removes ordinary Search visibility and therefore is not the right choice when you want to stay in Search.

Google’s snippet controls documentation notes an important exception to positive max-snippet limits: the limit does not apply where a publisher has separately granted permission, such as through certain in-page structured data or a license agreement.

Why noindex and Google-Extended are different

noindex is not a narrower version of nosnippet: it tells Google not to show the page in Search results. Because an AI Overview supporting link must be indexed, using noindex also gives up ordinary Search visibility.

Google-Extended is not the control to use for opting out of AI Overviews in Search. Google distinguishes Googlebot directives for Search crawling from Google-Extended controls related to training and grounding in some other Google systems. For AI Overviews, use the Search preview controls described above.

Verify the directive and allow time for Google to process it

  1. Publish the directive. Add the Googlebot meta tag to the page, or configure the equivalent X-Robots-Tag response header.
  2. Check for conflicts. Review the page’s other robots directives. Google’s robots meta tag specifications say that when directives conflict, the more restrictive rule applies.
  3. Inspect what Google received. Use URL Inspection in Search Console to check the directive Googlebot saw for the URL. Google provides instructions in its URL Inspection Tool help.
  4. Wait for recrawl and processing. Google’s recrawl guidance says changes can take several days to several months to be processed, depending on how often Google determines the page should be refreshed. You can request a recrawl, but that does not guarantee indexing or serving.

Google Search Central describes nosnippet this way in its Robots Meta Tags Specifications: “Do not show a text snippet or video preview in the search results for this page.”
