Hair loss has been added to the safety labeling for several GLP-1 medicines, including semaglutide products, but that signal does not prove the medicine directly causes shedding in every person. Rapid weight loss and changes in food intake or nutrition may also contribute. The sources reviewed do not establish a GLP-1-specific nail effect.
Can Ozempic or semaglutide cause hair loss?
Hair loss, also called alopecia, appears in safety labeling for multiple GLP-1 medicines. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that labeling for Adlyxin, Saxenda, Soliqua 100/33, Trulicity, Victoza, Mounjaro, Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Xultophy 100/3.6 was updated between December 2024 and May 2025 to include alopecia. A labeling change is an important safety signal, but it does not by itself establish how often the effect occurs, prove a direct biological cause, or show that every case is due to the medicine. The FDA’s 2026 Wegovy label reports hair loss in 4% of participants receiving Wegovy and 0% receiving placebo in a specific clinical trial involving adults with MASH, a liver condition. Those figures apply to that trial and population; they are not an overall rate for Wegovy users, Ozempic users, or GLP-1 medicines generally. 2026 Wegovy prescribing information.

Why might hair shedding happen?
A possible link with weight loss and intake
Rapid weight loss can act as a metabolic stressor and may trigger telogen effluvium, a non-scarring form of hair shedding. Reduced food intake or nutritional changes during weight loss may also be relevant. This is a plausible indirect pathway, not proof that semaglutide or another GLP-1 molecule directly damages hair follicles. 2025 scoping review.
What studies can and cannot tell us
A 2025 systematic review included 10 studies, spanning retrospective cohorts, pharmacovigilance analyses, modeling, a case-control study, and a case report. The authors described the evidence as heterogeneous, with hair-loss type and timing incompletely characterized, and called for further study. These different study designs do not provide a single reliable estimate of risk or establish one mechanism. 2025 systematic review.

Clinical-trial adverse-event tables and postmarketing safety reports answer different questions, and results from different products, doses, and patient populations should not be compared as if they came from a head-to-head trial.

Can GLP-1 drugs affect your nails?
The sources reviewed do not establish a GLP-1-specific nail effect or a reliable rate of nail changes. Nail symptoms should therefore be treated as an unresolved question, not a confirmed class side effect. Findings about nail toxicity from unrelated medicines should not be applied to GLP-1 drugs.

What to do if you notice hair shedding
Tell your prescribing clinician about new or concerning shedding. It can help to note when it began, how quickly your weight has changed, and whether your eating pattern has changed. Your clinician can consider these details alongside other possible causes. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or start hair or nail supplements on the assumption that either is a proven solution; the evidence here does not establish those steps as treatment.
