Open-source tools can replace PowerPoint, but the right choice depends on how you build and share presentations. LibreOffice Impress offers a familiar desktop slide editor, ONLYOFFICE Presentation Editor is aimed at PowerPoint-file workflows, and impress.js turns presentations into browser-based projects built with code. Those are distinct approaches—not proof that any one will suit every deck or that it was the tool an author personally kept using.

Which kind of PowerPoint replacement do you need?

Start with the work you need the software to do. If you want to create and rearrange slides in a graphical interface, consider LibreOffice Impress or ONLYOFFICE Presentation Editor. If you want to construct a presentation using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, impress.js is a different kind of option: a framework rather than a conventional slide editor.

Tool Authoring approach What the available documentation establishes
LibreOffice Impress Desktop slide editor Uses ODP as its default presentation format; its guide describes opening ODP presentations in other software, including PowerPoint, and exporting to formats such as PPT. LibreOffice Impress Guide
ONLYOFFICE Presentation Editor Presentation editor positioned around PowerPoint slides The vendor says it works with PowerPoint slides, exports to PDF, PNG, and JPG, and that its free desktop editors can edit local presentations offline. These are vendor-stated capabilities, not independent compatibility test results. ONLYOFFICE Presentation Editor
impress.js Code-based browser presentation framework The project describes a framework using CSS3 transforms and transitions in modern browsers, with a “Classic Slides” example for a traditional rectangular-slide look. impress.js project

What is LibreOffice Impress like for everyday slides?

Impress is LibreOffice’s presentation module. Its guide describes a conventional slide-making workspace with a Slides pane for selecting, reordering, duplicating, hiding, and deleting slides. Workspace views include Normal, Outline, Notes, and Slide Sorter; the guide also covers layouts, master slides, speaker notes, and slide-show controls. See the LibreOffice Impress Guide.

Impress uses ODP as its default presentation format. The guide says: “ODP presentations can be opened by other presentation software like Microsoft PowerPoint and exported in different formats, such as PPT.” That describes an available format workflow, not a guarantee that every deck will look or behave identically in another program. If you exchange editable files, open a copy of your actual presentation in the software your recipient uses and check the result.

When does ONLYOFFICE make sense?

ONLYOFFICE’s product page presents Presentation Editor as a tool for working with PowerPoint slides. It also says presentations can be saved as PDF, PNG, or JPG, and that free ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors can edit local presentations offline. The statements describe the vendor’s offering; they do not establish how well a particular complex deck converts.

Who should choose impress.js?

impress.js is for people comfortable authoring with web technologies. Rather than arranging slides entirely through a graphical editor, you build a browser presentation with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The project describes support in modern browsers and says recent versions of Firefox and Chrome are known to work well. Its README also includes a “Classic Slides” example for people who prefer rectangular slides over more spatial presentations. Details are in the impress.js README.

  • The LCD display with timer lets you manage your time with silent, vibrating alerts and controls that are easy to set and adjust–-you’ll focus on your presentation, not the clock.

This approach offers control through code but changes the setup and authoring work. You need to be comfortable editing the presentation’s source and should rehearse it in the browser you plan to use. The project describes presenting from a laptop with a known-working browser as a typical use case; that is not a compatibility guarantee for every device or browser.

How should you choose and hand off a deck?

  1. Choose an authoring workflow. Use Impress or ONLYOFFICE if you want a conventional graphical slide editor. Consider impress.js if building a web presentation with code is part of the appeal.
  2. Try your real files. If you need PowerPoint interchange, open copies of your typical presentations and inspect fonts, charts, animations, transitions, and layouts in the application that will receive them.
  3. Match the handoff to the recipient. Send an editable presentation when the recipient needs to continue editing. For view-only sharing, consider PDF; LibreOffice’s guide recommends it for that purpose. ONLYOFFICE’s page also lists PDF and image exports.
  4. Rehearse the final version. Check the exported or converted file in the intended viewing environment rather than relying only on how it looked in the editor.
