Yes. The Open Graph protocol allows og:image to point to an image URL, and it does not publish an allowlist that excludes WebP. You can therefore use a publicly reachable WebP URL, optionally declare og:image:type as image/webp, and add dimensions and alternative text. That syntax alone does not guarantee that every social crawler can decode or display WebP. If a preview must work across several networks, keep a JPEG or PNG fallback and test the real shared URL on each destination.
What the Open Graph specification actually says
The four required properties for an Open Graph page are og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url, as documented at ogp.me. The og:image value is an image URL representing the page or object; the protocol does not say that the URL must end in .jpg or .png.
The same specification defines optional image properties: og:image:url, og:image:secure_url, og:image:type, og:image:width, og:image:height, and og:image:alt. The type field is a MIME type, so image/webp is the appropriate description for a WebP resource. The specification does not provide a complete list of image encodings that every consumer must support. Declaring a MIME type describes the candidate; it cannot make a crawler’s decoder support that format.
A WebP Open Graph implementation
Use an absolute, publicly retrievable HTTPS URL. The image response should contain the actual bytes and a sensible Content-Type, rather than an HTML error page or a redirect that requires authentication.

Confirm that the response is successful, has an image content type, and is accessible without cookies, a login, or a browser-only challenge. A correct HTML tag is useless if the crawler cannot fetch the bytes.
Why browser WebP support does not settle social-preview support
WebP delivery guidance from Google says to serve WebP to clients that can display it and fall back to legacy formats for clients that cannot. Browser support and social scraping are different questions: a social service sends its own HTTP request, may not send the same Accept header as a browser, and may use a decoder with different format support. See Google’s guidance at its WebP FAQ. WebP is formally described in RFC 9649 (November 2024), but that standard does not require a social platform to render every WebP URL.
Consequently, “WebP works in Chrome” is not proof that a LinkedIn, Facebook, Reddit, or other preview fetcher will display the same URL. Platform behavior can change, and public anecdotes are not a platform-wide compatibility guarantee.

Use a JPEG or PNG fallback when reach matters
For a single known consumer that you have tested, WebP alone may be acceptable. For pages shared to multiple destinations, publish a fallback. The Open Graph protocol permits multiple og:image declarations; its documentation gives the first value preference when values conflict. Consumers’ selection rules are not fully specified, so test the order that your target services actually use.

If a service chooses only the first declaration, putting WebP first makes that service’s decoder support decisive; putting JPEG first maximizes conservative compatibility but may prevent a WebP-capable consumer from using the smaller file. There is no protocol-level switch that forces every consumer to choose a particular candidate.
Negotiating WebP by HTTP is not an Open Graph fallback
Some image servers inspect the request’s Accept header and return WebP to capable clients and JPEG or PNG otherwise. This is useful for browsers, but it is not a substitute for testing crawlers. A crawler might omit image/webp, send a generic header, cache a previous response, or fetch through an intermediary. Make sure content negotiation varies caches correctly (for example, with Vary: Accept) and that the non-WebP response is a valid image. When social compatibility is critical, explicit, stable URLs for both WebP and a fallback are easier to diagnose.

What is and is not established for major platforms
LinkedIn’s current Images API documentation lists JPG, GIF, and PNG for uploaded image assets and says images must contain fewer than 36,152,320 pixels. That is an API upload rule. It does not conclusively state how every LinkedIn page-preview scraper handles a WebP URL in og:image. Do not turn the upload list into a claim that all metadata previews reject WebP.
Meta, Reddit, and other URL scrapers
The accessible Open Graph specification and the Facebook-maintained protocol repository (repository mirror) define metadata semantics, not a current support commitment for every platform’s crawler. The available documentation does not establish a universal Meta rule for WebP URLs, response headers, dimensions, or debugger behavior. Treat Reddit’s support as a question to verify, not as an assumption.

A practical compatibility checklist
- Inspect the HTML. Fetch the public page without a browser session and verify one canonical
og:url, a descriptive title, and at least one absoluteog:image. - Inspect every image URL. Check status, redirects,
Content-Type, dimensions, and that the body is really an image. Remove authentication, expiring signatures, and bot challenges from the asset path. - Choose a fallback policy. Keep JPEG or PNG alongside WebP when several social destinations matter. Decide which candidate is first, document that decision, and avoid silently changing order.
- Share a cache-busting test URL. Add a harmless query string or use a new image filename after changing the asset, because preview services can cache HTML and images independently.
- Run each platform’s current preview/debug tool. Submit the exact public page, inspect the selected image, and request a refresh after changes. A successful browser load is not a crawler test.
- Repeat after deployment. Verify from outside your network and monitor server logs for crawler requests, status codes, and content types without blocking legitimate user agents.

Performance, dimensions, and accessibility considerations
WebP can reduce transfer size. Google’s FAQ reports an average of 30% more compression than JPEG without loss of image quality, but that is Google’s cited summary, not a guarantee for your artwork or a social crawler. Generate the image at the dimensions your target services expect, keep important text away from edges that may be cropped, and avoid relying on animation or transparency unless you have tested the result.

Set og:image:alt to meaningful alternative text. It describes the image for consumers that expose it; it does not replace the page’s accessible text. Keep the image URL stable, cacheable, and free of user-specific data. Never put secrets in query strings used for public previews.

Use WebP in og:image when its smaller payload benefits you, but treat it as one candidate rather than a universal guarantee. For broad sharing, publish a tested JPEG or PNG fallback, keep URLs public and correctly typed, and validate the real page on every service that matters. The protocol permits WebP; only the actual crawler-and-decoder path can tell you whether a given preview will display it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding og:image:type=image/webp force a platform to support WebP?
No. It supplies MIME metadata for the candidate. The platform still has to fetch and decode the image.
Should I convert every WebP Open Graph image to JPEG?
Not necessarily. Keep WebP if your tested destinations render it, and retain a JPEG or PNG candidate when compatibility across untested or changing crawlers is important.
Is LinkedIn’s JPG/GIF/PNG list proof that LinkedIn rejects WebP in page metadata?
No. The cited list applies to LinkedIn’s Images API uploads, not conclusively to every scraper that reads an og:image URL.
