Autounattend.xml can automate selected parts of Windows Setup, but it does not install a complete collection of apps by itself. To automate app installation, you must configure scripts or other deployment tools separately. The file can streamline Windows configuration; it cannot guarantee that setting up a new PC will take hours less.
What is Autounattend.xml?
An answer file is an XML document containing settings for Windows Setup. Microsoft typically calls the file Unattend.xml; when Windows Setup searches removable media automatically, the recognized filename is Autounattend.xml. The name depends on how the file is used, not on a different file format. Microsoft’s answer-file overview explains the format and its role.
With the right settings, an answer file can automate selected installation choices and configuration. It can also be configured to run scripts in supported setup phases. Those scripts—not the XML file acting as an app catalogue—would handle additional tasks such as installing applications.
Can it install all your apps on a new PC?
Not on its own. The answer file defines Windows Setup settings; it does not contain an automatically populated list of your apps. App deployment requires commands or scripts that you have configured, or a separate deployment method. The available Microsoft guidance establishes that scripts can be used in setup phases, but does not endorse a particular app bundle or promise that every application can be installed this way.

So, “one file” is best understood as one way to direct Windows Setup and potentially start configured automation—not as a ready-made, all-apps installer. No documented time-saving figure establishes how many hours this approach saves.
How Windows Setup uses the file
Windows Setup applies answer-file settings in configuration passes, which correspond to different stages of installation. Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance lists windowsPE, offlineServicing, specialize, auditUser, and oobeSystem. Settings and configured commands need to be placed in a pass appropriate to when they should run. Microsoft’s answer-file guidance describes the passes and script use.

Setup can suppress some pages when the relevant settings are provided. If required settings are missing or incorrect, Windows Setup may show its user interface instead. A file therefore should not be assumed to deliver a fully hands-off installation until its required settings and target configuration have been accounted for. How to create and validate an answer file
- Get the Windows ADK and open Windows System Image Manager (Windows SIM). Windows SIM is Microsoft’s documented tool for creating and editing answer files. Microsoft’s Windows 11 deployment guidance describes the ADK workflow.
- Associate the file with the intended Windows image. Windows SIM uses the image to show available components and help validate settings. Test against the image you plan to install rather than assuming settings will behave identically everywhere.
- Choose settings and configuration passes deliberately. Put each setting in the phase that matches the installation stage, and configure any scripts needed for tasks such as app deployment.
- Validate and test the intended configuration. Settings for components absent from an image may be ignored. Missing or invalid required settings can cause Setup to display pages that you expected it to skip.
Windows SIM uses catalog files (.clg) when working with images, but Microsoft says a catalog file is not required to install Windows. An answer file may be used with another image; settings for components that image does not contain may simply be ignored. Microsoft’s image and catalog overview explains their roles.

How to provide the file to Windows Setup

- A Windows image and Windows SIM: Use the target image to author and validate the answer file with Microsoft’s ADK tool.
- Removable media, if using automatic discovery: A suitable USB flash drive can carry the answer file, while Windows installation media can be on another drive.
- Scripts or deployment tooling for apps: These must be configured separately; the answer file is not an app list.
The XML can be authored on a PC. A USB drive is a practical way to provide installation media or the answer file, but there is no need to buy another drive if you already have suitable media.
