Possibly, but it is unproven. Members-only chat can make membership more valuable to viewers who want to participate, while leaving the public livestream visible to everyone. But there is no controlled evidence that turning it on increases paid memberships, and no published result specific to 24/7 streams. Treat it as a test, not a guaranteed growth tactic.
What members-only chat changes—and what it does not
YouTube’s rule is straightforward: “During public live streams, you can make the chat members-only. Everyone can still view the live stream, but only members can post chats.” (YouTube Help.) Nonmembers can still watch the public video; the restriction applies to posting in chat.
That differs from a members-only livestream, where only members at permitted levels can watch. It also differs from switching a public stream into a members-only segment: that transition restricts continued viewing and gives nonmembers an explicit prompt to join or upgrade. In short, the proposed mechanism is plausible: viewers who want to contribute may see membership as worthwhile. Whether that benefit outweighs reduced participation from nonmembers depends on the channel and audience. Public evidence does not settle that trade-off for a 24/7 broadcast.

How to test the setting on a 24/7 stream
Run a limited, clearly announced comparison rather than leaving the audience to infer why chat changed. The following is a practical testing approach, not a recipe validated by YouTube.

- Hold other changes steady. Note the invitation viewers saw and any changes to perks or promotion. Avoid introducing several new membership incentives at once if you want to understand whether the chat rule may have mattered.
- Track exposure and audience behavior. Record stream traffic and compare membership joins in relation to viewer exposure. Also watch public chat participation, viewing activity, and return viewing. These measures can reveal costs or benefits beyond sign-ups.
- Review Studio results and qualify the conclusion. YouTube recommends monitoring membership acquisition and retention. It also reports public and members-only portions of a transitioned live stream as separate, distinct videos in Analytics. Limit the test and tell viewers when it will end. If the explicit join prompt is the main hypothesis, compare members-only chat with a public-to-members-only transition instead—but announce the change in advance. Choose a membership perk viewers can understand
Chat access is only one possible reason to join. A milestone chat is not the same as members-only chat. Eligible members can send one highlighted message per month starting in their second consecutive membership month, and those milestone messages remain visible to all viewers.
