Yes, a web page can estimate a mouse’s polling rate, but only in a narrow sense. JavaScript can measure how often the browser delivers pointer samples to the page while the mouse moves. That number is shaped by the mouse, the operating system, and the browser, so it is an observed rate under one setup, not a hardware specification. If you need the number printed on a spec sheet or reported by a vendor utility, a web page cannot replace that.

Why the answer is “estimate,” not “measure”

A polling rate describes how often the mouse reports its position to the computer. A web page never sees those reports directly. It sees events that the browser has already processed, decided to dispatch, and sometimes merged together. Each step can change the count, so a page-level test measures the end of that chain.

The W3C Pointer Events specification addresses this directly. It states: “This specification does not define how user agents should coalesce or predict pointer movement data.” Coalescing and prediction are left to each browser, which means two browsers on the same machine with the same mouse can expose different sample rates.

Three numbers that are easy to confuse

Most bad mouse-rate tests come from counting the wrong thing. The table below separates the quantities a page can observe from the one most readers actually want.

What is counted Where it comes from Does it reflect the mouse’s hardware report rate?
Number of pointermove listener calls per second Pointer Events dispatch to the page Only indirectly. One dispatched event can stand for several pointer changes, so the count can undercount.
Samples returned by getCoalescedEvents() for each dispatched event Pointer Events, in supporting browsers and secure contexts Closer to the exposed sample stream, but still limited by the browser’s coalescing and by the device and platform.
Number of requestAnimationFrame() callbacks per second MDN describes these as generally matching the display refresh rate No. This tracks rendering schedule, not pointer input, and callbacks pause in most background tabs and hidden iframes.

The third row is the one most likely to produce a convincing but wrong number. A test that counts animation frames while the mouse moves is measuring the screen’s refresh cycle, which has nothing to do with how often the mouse reports.

How the browser exposes mouse samples

Pointer Events fire on mouse movement as pointermove. Some browsers also support pointerrawupdate, which is designed to fire as soon as raw pointer changes are available, before the page’s normal event handling. Either event can be used as a starting point, but the timestamps you read are only as fine-grained as the browser allows.

When several pointer changes occur between dispatches, the browser can merge them into one event. The getCoalescedEvents() method on a pointer event returns the underlying samples that the merged event represents. MDN marks this method as limited availability and notes that it is restricted to secure contexts, so the page must be served over HTTPS or from localhost, and the method must be feature-detected before use.

Build a browser estimate step by step

  1. Serve the test page over HTTPS or from localhost. Open it in the browser you intend to test, in a foreground tab, with no other heavy page activity.
  2. Confirm the method exists before relying on it. In the console, run 'getCoalescedEvents' in PointerEvent.prototype. If it returns false, the page can still record dispatched events, but the result will be coarser.
  3. Collect timestamps for every sample while you move the mouse steadily for several seconds. Use the timeStamp value of each coalesced sample when available, and fall back to the dispatched event’s timeStamp when it is not.
  4. Compute the median interval between consecutive timestamps and convert it to a rate. Discard non-positive gaps, which can appear when timestamps repeat.
  5. Repeat the test with the same mouse, browser, and motion, and compare results. Report the rate with the browser name, version, operating system, and whether coalesced samples were used.
const hasCoalesced = typeof PointerEvent !== 'undefined' && 'getCoalescedEvents' in PointerEvent.prototype && window.isSecureContext;
const stamps = [];

window.addEventListener('pointermove', function (e) {
  const samples = hasCoalesced ? e.getCoalescedEvents() : [e];
  for (let i = 0; i < samples.length; i++) {
    stamps.push(samples[i].timeStamp);
  }
});

function estimateRate(times) {
  const gaps = [];
  for (let i = 1; i < times.length; i++) {
    const gap = times[i] - times[i - 1];
    if (gap > 0) gaps.push(gap);
  }
  if (gaps.length < 20) return null;
  gaps.sort(function (a, b) { return a - b; });
  const median = gaps[Math.floor(gaps.length / 2)];
  return 1000 / median;
}

// Call estimateRate(stamps) after a few seconds of steady movement.

The median is used instead of the average so that a single long pause, or a burst of merged samples, does not dominate the result. Twenty gaps is a floor for a usable sample, not a guarantee of accuracy.

Reading the result honestly

A result from this page is a statement about what the browser delivered to JavaScript under those conditions. It is not a certified polling rate. Report it in that form, for example: “Chrome on Windows, coalesced samples, steady movement, median sample rate of N per second.” Do not present it as the mouse’s polling rate without that context.

Where the method breaks

  • No coalesced samples. Browsers or contexts without getCoalescedEvents() only give you dispatched events, which can undercount the underlying movement.
  • Insecure context. Where the method is restricted to secure contexts, serving the page over plain HTTP removes it silently unless you check window.isSecureContext.
  • Background or hidden pages. Animation-frame callbacks pause in background tabs and hidden iframes, so any test that relies on them, or that runs while the tab is not visible, will return misleading numbers.
  • Browser coalescing and prediction. The specification leaves these decisions to the user agent, so a lower exposed rate does not prove the mouse is slow.
  • Device and platform differences. Event frequency depends on the implementation, the device, and the platform, so results will not transfer cleanly between machines.
  • Background load. Heavy page scripts or other applications can delay event delivery and change the observed gaps. Close other activity before testing.

When a browser test is the right tool

A browser test is useful for comparing how a particular browser delivers pointer input on your machine, checking whether a change in browser settings or version alters delivery, or building a diagnostic that explains why a game or drawing app feels uneven. It is not the right tool for verifying a manufacturer’s claim. For that, use the mouse vendor’s own software or an external measurement method that reads the device’s reports directly.
