Sometimes—but only for a narrow set of small-tablet tasks. iPhone Duo combines a phone with a foldable inner screen and adds two-app multitasking, so it may suit people who mainly browse, read, watch content, and occasionally use two apps at once. Its open display is smaller than the iPad mini’s, and Apple does not describe Duo as an iPad replacement. The deciding factors are how you use a tablet, whether you rely on Pencil workflows, and whether carrying one device matters more than a larger screen.
What Apple says—and what it does not
Apple presents iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone, with a larger inner display and iOS 27 features for multitasking. It does not call the device a tablet or explicitly claim that it replaces an iPad mini. Apple CEO John Ternus described Duo as combining a large iPhone display with portability, content, multitasking, and gaming; that is product positioning, not a tablet-replacement claim. Apple’s 2026 announcement is the basis for the product details below.

Apple’s current iPad mini technical specifications list the display and weights shown above. The open Duo is close to a small-tablet size, but its 7.6-inch display is smaller than the mini’s 8.3-inch panel. The figures do not establish which device feels more comfortable for reading, video, or typing; that depends on the task and personal preference.
What Duo’s multitasking could cover
Apple says iOS 27 on Duo supports Split View with two apps side by side, two windows of the same app such as Safari, quick app switching, and saved app pairs. That feature set makes Duo a plausible fit for occasional two-app tasks—such as keeping a reference open while browsing or switching between reading and notes.

Those features do not establish that every iPad app or workflow will work the same way on Duo. Check support for the apps you depend on, especially if your routine involves more than the light two-app use Apple describes.
When one device may be enough
Duo is most likely to replace a small tablet for someone whose tablet use is mainly content consumption and browsing, with occasional side-by-side app use. The appeal is carrying one device that serves as both phone and foldable screen. That convenience is a tradeoff, not proof that the phone offers the same workspace or flexibility as a separate tablet.

- You mostly read, browse, watch content, or use familiar apps.
- Your multitasking is occasional and fits the two-app features Apple describes.
- You value combining phone and larger-screen use in one device.
When the iPad mini remains the safer choice
The mini is the more established fit if you specifically want its larger 8.3-inch display or depend on a tablet workflow that Apple has not demonstrated for Duo. Apple’s current iPad mini specifications list support for both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple says Duo will support Apple Pencil (USB-C) later in 2026 for notes, sketching, and document markup; that is future availability, so confirm the feature has shipped before counting on it.
- You want the larger display for your usual reading, video, or work sessions.
- You rely on Apple Pencil Pro, or need a Pencil workflow not confirmed for Duo.
- Your work depends on particular iPad apps, layouts, or extended typing comfort that you have not verified on Duo.
Price and timing matter to the decision
Apple lists a U.S. starting price of $1,999 for iPhone Duo. Preorders begin October 16, 2026, with availability beginning October 23 in the initial markets. Those are Apple’s announced U.S. price and initial-market dates; they do not establish pricing or availability in other regions. Compare the actual cost of the devices you would otherwise buy, rather than treating Duo’s one-device design as an automatic saving.

How to decide before replacing your tablet
- List your tablet tasks. Separate routine browsing and video from tasks that require handwriting, drawing, long reading sessions, or a particular iPad app.
- Check app support. Confirm that the apps and layouts you need work on iPhone Duo, rather than assuming iPad compatibility means the same experience.
- Verify Pencil timing. If notes or markup are essential, confirm that Apple Pencil (USB-C) support for Duo is available when you plan to buy.
- Compare the screens in person. Apple’s dimensions show that the open Duo is smaller than the iPad mini; they cannot tell you which screen is comfortable for your own reading, video, or typing.
- Compare the actual total cost. Use current regional prices and availability for the devices relevant to your decision.
