Yes. You do not universally need a high-end GPU to preview hairstyles: some apps process AI images on cloud servers, while simpler live hair-segmentation and recoloring effects can run on a phone’s GPU. The requirement depends on the app and the feature, so check its internet, operating-system, and device requirements rather than assuming all hairstyle previews work the same way.

Why a hairstyle preview may not need a powerful graphics card

A GPU performs graphics and AI computations, but the work does not always happen on your device. A cloud-based app can upload your photo and run its demanding generation step on remote servers. In that case, your device still needs to run the app and display the result, but a high-end local GPU is not necessarily what makes the preview possible.

Other effects, such as identifying hair in a live camera image and recoloring it, can be designed to run on a mobile GPU. This is a narrower task than generating a substantially different hairstyle from a photo, and performance depends on the app’s implementation and the phone.

How processing differs between apps

Example What the source says What it means for your device
Hair Magic Hair Magic says that after you choose a look and tap Generate, your photo is uploaded and the AI preview is processed in the cloud. It requires internet access and lists iPhone with iOS 17 or later as its platform requirement. Hair Magic product information. The documented generation workflow relies on connectivity and a supported iPhone, not a stated high-end local GPU.
Ulta Beauty GLAMlab NVIDIA describes Ulta Beauty’s hairstyle and color try-ons as using NVIDIA Tensor Core GPUs in the cloud. NVIDIA reports about five seconds to compute the first style and about one second for later styles in this implementation. NVIDIA, December 19, 2024. Those are reported timings for this named cloud system, not a promise about other apps, network conditions, or current performance.
Mobile hair segmentation and recoloring A 2019 paper by Tkachenka and coauthors describes a lightweight approach for segmenting hair in mobile-phone video and supporting AR recoloring. The authors report 30–100+ frames per second on mobile GPUs, depending on the device. Tkachenka et al., July 15, 2019. Mobile-GPU processing is feasible for that defined task; the result does not establish performance for every generative hairstyle replacement feature or phone.
Visio The Google Play listing describes uploading a selfie to preview hairstyles and colors, but does not state where processing happens or specify a GPU. Google Play listing. A feature description alone is not enough to determine whether the app uses cloud processing or on-device hardware.
L’Oréal Professionnel virtual try-on L’Oréal Professionnel presents a browser-based tool for trying hair colors with a photo or selfie and cautions that results vary with current hair color, lighting, and screen settings. L’Oréal Professionnel UK. Browser availability does not, by itself, disclose where the image processing runs or establish a GPU requirement.

What to check before installing or using an app

  • Supported device and operating system: Check the app’s current store listing and help page. Requirements can change; Hair Magic, for example, lists iPhone with iOS 17 or later.
  • Internet requirement: A cloud workflow needs a working connection to upload a photo and receive the result. Check the app’s own instructions for whether any features work offline.
  • Feature type: Live recoloring and hair segmentation are not the same workload as generating a new hairstyle from a still photo. Confirm the requirement for the feature you intend to use.
  • Processing location: Look for an explicit statement that a feature runs on-device or in the cloud. If the listing does not say, do not infer the answer from the word “AI” or from the preview itself.
  • Service availability: Cloud processing also depends on the provider’s service being available; local GPU capability cannot compensate for an unavailable cloud service.

There is no established universal minimum GPU, RAM amount, or phone model across hairstyle preview apps. If you have an older phone, the most useful evidence is the specific app’s compatibility information and whether it requires an internet connection—not a general GPU rule.

What a virtual preview can—and cannot—tell you

A preview helps compare ideas, but it cannot guarantee a salon result. Hair Magic describes its output as a visual estimate. L’Oréal Professionnel notes that a color preview can vary with your existing hair color, photo lighting, and screen settings, and recommends consulting a stylist for the most precise color match. A rendered shade on a display should not be treated as a reliable prediction of how dye will look on your hair.
