Yes. A QR code can become a route to a phishing site if someone replaces the code, sends a malicious code, or takes control of a domain or redirect service that a legitimate code still uses. The printed pattern does not verify who controls its destination over time. Before opening a scan result, check the full URL and verify unexpected payment or login requests through a contact method you already trust.
How QR code domain hijacking works
A QR code stores data, often a URL. Some codes point directly to a website; others point first to a branded domain or a QR provider’s redirect service, which then sends the scanner elsewhere. If that first domain or redirect endpoint changes hands, the code’s printed pattern can stay the same while the destination changes.
Abandoned domains and subdomains
An organization may stop using a service but leave a DNS reference behind. For example, a dangling CNAME can point a subdomain to a third-party service after the organization has stopped using it. If that service allows someone else to claim the unassigned custom domain, the new claimant may be able to serve content through the trusted-looking subdomain. An expired domain can also be registered by someone new while old QR codes or systems still point to it. CYFIRMA described these abandoned-infrastructure risks in a March 24, 2026 report: CYFIRMA’s research on abandoned infrastructure.
For a QR code, the practical concern is that a once-legitimate printed link can later lead somewhere controlled by an attacker. Review the actual URL encoded in the code and the redirects it uses, not only the logo or design printed beside it. CYFIRMA also notes that DNSSEC does not prevent an attacker from claiming an endpoint that a valid DNS record already points to; DNSSEC is not a safeguard against every abandoned-service takeover.

QR-provider custom domains: a reported, unverified risk
Late-September 2026 reporting surfaced a researcher’s claim involving a QR-code vendor’s custom-domain feature, naming QR TIGER and describing how a previously printed branded code might be redirected. The underlying technical disclosure could not be reviewed, so this should be treated as a reported risk, not as confirmation that QR TIGER is currently vulnerable or that all QR services share the issue. The surfaced reports were published by iTnews and Mirage Threat Watcher.
How this differs from ordinary QR phishing
Not every malicious QR code involves a domain takeover. In ordinary QR phishing, or “quishing,” a criminal can replace a public code with a sticker, send a malicious code in an unexpected email or text, or put one on a fraudulent payment notice. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warns about physical and digital tampering, while the FTC describes QR scams involving parking meters and urgent account or delivery messages.

A successful scan can lead to a convincing credential or payment page, a malware link, or a payment redirected to a threat actor. Singapore’s joint advisory from the Police Force and Cyber Security Agency describes QR-code swaps that redirect payments. Domain takeover is distinct from replacing a sticker, QR Login account hijacking (sometimes called QRLJacking), or DNS cache poisoning; these are different mechanisms.

- Preview the destination before opening it. Use your phone’s built-in camera or a trusted QR reader that displays the URL. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security cautions that unknown third-party scanner apps can pose privacy or malware risks.
- Inspect the actual domain name. Look for misspellings, extra characters, or an unfamiliar host. A brand name elsewhere in the URL does not prove that the brand controls the domain. The FBI/IC3 warns that a malicious domain may resemble the intended address through a typo or misplaced letter: FBI/IC3 QR-code advisory, January 18, 2022.
- Pause if the code arrived unexpectedly. Do not scan under pressure from an urgent text or email. Visit the organization’s known website yourself or call a number you already trust. The FTC’s December 6, 2023 QR-code scam alert explains how unexpected messages can lead to spoofed sites.
- Check public codes for tampering. If a code looks like a sticker placed over another code or otherwise altered, ask the organization to verify it. The FBI/IC3 advisory and Singapore’s joint advisory recommend checking for suspicious changes.
- Verify payment and login requests independently. Do not enter credentials or payment details on a page reached through a suspicious code. For a payment, confirm the recipient and amount in a trusted payment app or with the organization. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security’s QR code security guidance also recommends checking a destination before proceeding.
What organizations should do about printed QR codes
Organizations that distribute long-lived codes should treat their destinations and redirects as infrastructure that needs an owner. These practices reduce exposure to abandoned-domain and service risks; they do not prevent every form of QR fraud.

- Keep an inventory of codes still in circulation and the URLs, redirect services, branded domains, and DNS records behind them.
- Maintain ownership and renewal of domains and custom subdomains used on printed materials while those codes remain active. Retire codes deliberately when their destinations are no longer maintained.
- When ending a QR-platform or SaaS relationship, remove obsolete CNAME records and custom-domain associations as part of offboarding. Whether an unclaimed endpoint can be taken over depends on the provider’s controls.
- Test destinations and redirect chains periodically, and after vendor, DNS, or domain changes. Use organization-controlled, monitored domains for high-risk payment and login flows.
- Include domain and redirect ownership in decommissioning checklists, with a named owner and planned retirement date.
If you already scanned a suspicious code
Scanning alone is not the same as entering credentials, making a payment, or installing software. If a suspicious page opened, close it and do not submit information or follow prompts to download an app. If you entered a password or payment details, contact the relevant service or financial institution through its genuine website or phone number and follow its account-security guidance. The cited public advisories emphasize caution and destination checks; they do not establish one universal incident-response procedure for every device or scan.
