Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) may reduce particular routes to ignition or thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries, but they do not make batteries fireproof. A 2023 laboratory study described a polymer designed to interrupt radical-driven reactions linked to thermal runaway; separate experiments show that gel-electrolyte cells can still pose a serious fire hazard under sufficient heat and charge. The results are formulation- and test-specific, not a safety guarantee for consumer batteries.
What a gel polymer electrolyte changes
A GPE is an electrolyte formulation incorporated into a battery cell, not a fire-extinguishing device or an external protective coating. The 2023 ACS Energy Letters paper describes a polymer that is soluble in carbonate electrolyte, cross-linkable in the presence of lithium salts such as LiPF6, and capable of forming a gel at 2 wt% in electrolyte. The authors’ stated mechanism is to scavenge radicals and impede chain reactions associated with thermal runaway and fire. They write that the GPE improves nonflammability “by blocking radical-initiated chain reactions which cause thermal runaway and finally fire issues.” Read the 2023 paper abstract.
The authors report thermally gelling cells after conventional assembly and testing their durability against external thermal and mechanical shocks without sacrificing cell performance. Those findings describe their particular formulation and laboratory cells; they do not establish that every GPE behaves the same way or that a commercial battery using one cannot ignite.

Why “gel” does not mean fireproof
Battery fire behavior depends on more than the electrolyte: cell chemistry and construction, state of charge, exposure to heat, and the abuse test all affect the outcome. A 2020 cone-calorimeter study of LiCoO2-based cells with gel electrolyte reported greater heat-contribution risk in its tests when state of charge exceeded 25% and incident heat flux exceeded 15 kW/m2. These are conditions associated with higher risk in that study, not universal thresholds for all batteries. See the 2020 cone-calorimeter study.
#1 Best Overall
- Energizer Double A Lithium batteries are the world's longest lasting AA batteries.
- These AA Energizer batteries power your most critical devices, great for smart home devices, outdoor surveillance systems, digital cameras, Blink outdoor cameras, and handheld games
- An Ultimate Lithium battery can hold power up to 25 years in storage for trustworthy backup energy, so you are always prepared
- Energizer lithium AA batteries are made with leak-proof construction to help protect devices (based on standard use)
- AA lithium batteries can perform in extreme temperatures from -40F to 140°F for year-round, indoor and outdoor use
GPE designs may target hazards such as leakage, flammability, or reactions that contribute to thermal runaway, but a cell can still burn and release heat during a fire. A safer electrolyte can reduce a particular risk pathway without eliminating the energy stored in the cell or every way a failure can develop.
What later studies report—and why the figures cannot be ranked directly
GPE is a broad family of formulations, not one standardized material. The following results come from distinct experimental systems and cannot be treated as a head-to-head comparison or as expected performance for batteries generally.

| Study and cell or formulation | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 2022, flame-retardant cross-linked GPE | 0.60 mS/cm ionic conductivity and a 5.0 V electrochemical window at ambient temperature | Material measurements reported by the study; they are not fire-safety outcomes. Study record. |
| 2024, chemically cross-linked nonflammable GPE in a pouch-type graphite/NMC cell | 146.7 mAh/g initial discharge capacity; 71.1% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 0.5 C and 55 °C | Performance in the reported cell and cycling conditions, not a general service-life estimate. Study record. |
| 2025, in-situ-fabricated nonflammable GPE | Thermal-runaway incubation time increased from 10.78 to 36.34 hours; maximum temperature-rise rate decreased from 612.0 to 388.2 °C/s | Comparisons within that study’s tested system; the figures should not be combined with other studies’ results. PubMed record. |
| 2026, low-reactivity GPE in nickel-rich lithium-ion pouch cells | 90.1% lower total heat generation; thermal-runaway peak temperature of 484 °C versus 547.2 °C for the comparison cell | Study-specific comparison, not a forecast for other chemistries or cell designs. Study record. |
A 2026 perspective surveys GPE strategies aimed at suppressing gas evolution, interphase degradation, ignition, and thermal runaway while balancing safety with energy density. It reflects ongoing research, not proof that these goals have been achieved in all cells. Read the perspective summary.
What this means for battery buyers
The cited papers concern electrolyte formulations and experimental cells. They do not identify a consumer-ready GPE product or a retrofit that can be applied to an existing battery. A battery should not be treated as safer based on the words “gel electrolyte” alone; the specific cell, its design, and the conditions under which it was evaluated matter.
