Yes. A 2009 laboratory study showed engineered microbes producing methyl halides from sugars and several unprocessed agricultural and woody residues. It establishes a proof of concept—not a demonstrated commercial process: the sources available do not establish current production at scale, a methyl-halide-specific pilot, or the route’s cost and lifecycle emissions.
How microbes make methyl halides from biomass
The pathway centers on methyl halide transferase (MHT), an enzyme that transfers a methyl group from S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) to a halide ion. In the 2009 study, researchers synthesized and screened 89 putative MHT genes drawn from plants, fungi, bacteria, and other database sources. When tested in Escherichia coli, 56% of the library was active on chloride, 85% on bromide, and 69% on iodide. Those percentages describe that study’s gene library and screening results; they are not general performance rates for MHT enzymes.
The researchers then engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) with a high-activity MHT. The study reported productivity of 190 mg/L-h using glucose and sucrose. That figure is the paper’s reported laboratory productivity on those sugars, not a commercial plant output or a result established for every feedstock. The 2009 paper’s PubMed record describes the work.

For less-processed feedstocks, the study paired engineered yeast with the cellulolytic bacterium Actinotalea fermentans in a symbiotic co-culture. It reported methyl halide production from unprocessed switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), corn stover, sugar cane bagasse, and poplar (Populus sp.). The result matters because it shows that the demonstrated concept was not limited to refined sugars. It does not, by itself, establish reliable operation, yields, or economics for an industrial residue-processing system.

What the results do—and do not—show
The evidence supports laboratory potential for making methyl halides from biomass waste and other non-food resources. It does not establish present-day commercial deployment, updated performance benchmarks, route economics, or a methyl-halide-specific pilot project.
The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) describes general biomass process scale-up, separations, catalytic pathways, and pilot capabilities. Its Thermal and Catalytic Process Development Unit covers thermochemical gasification and pyrolysis. These are general capabilities, not evidence that NLR is piloting this biological methyl-halide process. For researchers or organizations exploring process development, NLR’s pages describe biomass scale-up capabilities and the Thermal and Catalytic Process Development Unit.

- Microbiology kit for growing, staining, and studying bacteria
- Activities for staining bacterial cells to examine their morphology
- Gram staining for determining if bacteria are Gram-positive, Gram-negative, or both
- Instructions and material safety data sheet (MSDS) packet for product information and handling procedures
- Suitable for age 13 and older with adult supervision
The reviewed sources also do not provide a methyl-halide-specific lifecycle assessment or a quantified comparison with conventional production. The biomass feedstock alone is not enough to conclude that the route is carbon-negative, climate-neutral, or cost-competitive.

Microbial production is not the same as emissions from burning biomass
Engineered microbial synthesis is a controlled production pathway; methyl chloride released when biomass burns is an atmospheric emission. A 1995 field study in Equatorial Africa estimated that biomass burning accounted for 10–40% of global methyl chloride turnover. Its best estimate was 515 × 109 g/y, with a range of 226–904 × 109 g/y. These are historical atmospheric estimates, not fermentation yields or output measurements from the engineered-microbe process. The 1995 study concerns emissions from burning.

Uses, regulation, and handling considerations
Methyl halides have been described as fumigants and as chemical precursors that can be catalytically converted into chemicals and fuels. Their uses and regulation differ by compound, so methyl bromide’s regulatory status should not be generalized to every methyl halide.
Methyl bromide has a specific U.S. phaseout history
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states: “Methyl bromide is a fumigant used to control pests in agriculture and shipping. Methyl bromide also depletes the ozone layer.” The EPA says U.S. production and consumption were phased out effective January 1, 2005, subject to critical-use and quarantine/preshipment exceptions. It also describes alternatives such as steam sterilization for some soil and pest combinations and integrated pest management. See the EPA’s methyl bromide information page, updated March 10, 2026.

Volatility makes process containment important
A historical NIOSH occupational-health report describes methyl chloride, methyl bromide, and methyl iodide as volatile chemicals frequently handled in closed systems. It identifies equipment connections, pump seals, sight glasses, and sampling points as possible exposure locations. This is general handling context, not a current exposure standard or a substitute for chemical-specific safety data and applicable legal requirements. The NIOSH report provides the historical occupational-health discussion.
