The editor most likely meant by this headline is Editora, though the title alone does not confirm that identification. Editora is a free, MIT-licensed, open-source editor for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with a VS Code keymap and features that reach beyond basic text editing. It may suit people who want one keyboard-driven editor for code and other files—but whether it can replace your setup depends on the tools and extensions your work requires.

What Editora offers in place of two editors

Editora’s project describes it as a keyboard-first editor with five selectable keymaps: Emacs, CUA, Sublime Text, VS Code, and IntelliJ IDEA. You can rebind commands, and the advertised editing features include macros and multiple cursors. That gives users of VS Code or other editors a way to retain familiar keyboard conventions while trying a different application. These are project-described capabilities, not an independent evaluation. Editora’s official site lists its current features and downloads.

The feature set also extends into IDE-style workflows. Editora advertises language-server support, debugging, Git and GitHub integrations, build and test integrations, and live previews for formats such as Markdown, Mermaid, CSV, PDFs, and diagrams. The range may make it a plausible all-purpose choice, but a list of integrations does not establish that it supports every language, debugger, project, or extension you currently depend on.

Check whether your actual workflow will transfer

The key distinction is that Editora does not bundle its own toolchain. Its project says integrations use command-line tools and language servers installed on your machine, and related features stay hidden until the relevant tool is detected. In practice, a replacement decision should start with your projects—not with the number of features on a product page.

  • Platforms: Editora lists macOS, Windows, and Linux downloads. For a broader editor-selection framework, MDN recommends considering operating-system support, technologies, expected features, extensibility, support, and look and feel: MDN’s guide to available text editors.

What the startup benchmark does—and does not—show

Editora’s project reports these launch-to-file-window medians from its own test:

Editor and version Median time
Editora 0.9.9 1.49 seconds
VS Code 1.125.0 1.49 seconds
IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2.0.1 5.60 seconds

The project ran the test on an Apple M5 with macOS 26.4.1, opening the same 710-line Markdown file without a project or workspace loaded. It timed five runs after discarding a warm-up, with a warm page cache. The endpoint was the editor window displaying the file; the test did not measure background work after the window appeared. These results describe that setup and method, not a universal speed ranking or a guarantee for your workload. The project publishes the benchmark on its official site.

Large files, installation, and source access

Editora’s current product page, which showed version 0.19.0 and an October 6, 2026 update when accessed on October 7, 2026, describes two large-file thresholds: at 5 MB and above, highlighting and the minimap are skipped; at 50 MB and above, files open read-only with a capped load. Check the current release information before switching if you regularly edit large files, since these limits may change.

The project offers native installers and self-contained runnable JARs for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It says the installers are currently unsigned, a practical consideration when deciding whether to install them. The project is free and open source under the MIT License; building from source requires JDK 25 or later, according to its site. A practical way to decide

  1. Keep your existing editors available. Install Editora alongside them rather than moving every project at once.
  2. Choose a representative project. Open a project that uses the languages, build tools, debugger, and Git workflow you rely on.
  3. Verify each integration. Confirm the required local tools and language servers are detected, then try editing, building, testing, debugging, and version-control tasks you actually perform.
  4. Test your largest routine files. Check how the current release handles your files, especially if they approach the published 5 MB and 50 MB thresholds.
  5. Switch only after checking the missing pieces. Make sure any indispensable extension or plugin has a workable alternative before relying on Editora as your sole editor.

This staged trial is more useful than treating a keymap or a launch-time result as proof of a complete replacement. The decision turns on whether Editora’s local-tool integrations and editing workflow cover your particular projects.
