Disabling 8.3 short-name creation can reduce some work when NTFS creates files, but Microsoft does not publish a Windows 11 benchmark showing how much faster it makes a PC. The change is most relevant to workloads that create many files; it is not a reliable way to speed up ordinary desktop use. You can check the current setting with Windows’ built-in fsutil command before deciding whether to change it.
What 8.3 file names do
An 8.3 name is a short alias associated with a longer file name. It supports older software that expects the traditional short-name format. Windows 11 includes the fsutil 8dot3name commands for checking and changing this behavior, and the setting can apply globally or per volume. Microsoft’s fsutil 8dot3name reference lists Windows 11 as an applicable system.
Why turning off creation might help—and what is not known
Microsoft documents that, when 8.3 name creation is enabled, NTFS creates an additional 8.3 name entry and looks up associated short names as it creates files in a directory. Microsoft’s fsutil behavior documentation describes that extra filesystem work.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11This makes a benefit plausible for a workload that creates many files, but Microsoft does not quantify the time saved or provide a Windows 11 consumer benchmark. There is no evidence here that a typical user will notice a speedup. If you want to evaluate your own machine, compare the same file-creation workload before and after the change, keeping the files, storage, and background activity as consistent as possible.

Check the current setting before changing it
Open Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator and query the system-wide behavior:

Use the output to understand the current configuration rather than assuming every Windows installation has the same default. Microsoft’s documentation describes four system-default values:
| Value | System-default behavior |
|---|---|
| 0 | Enable 8.3 name creation on all volumes |
| 1 | Disable 8.3 name creation on all volumes |
| 2 | Set 8.3 name creation per volume |
| 3 | Disable 8.3 name creation on all volumes except the system volume |
These are values for the system default, not a recommendation to apply one universally. For per-volume settings, Microsoft says to set the default behavior to 2 first. Consult the fsutil 8dot3name documentation for the command syntax and behavior before changing a volume.

Disabling future creation is not the same as removing existing aliases
Changing the setting to disable creation affects new 8.3 names; it does not automatically strip aliases that already exist. Removing existing names is a separate, riskier operation because software or uninstallers may still refer to them.
Microsoft warns: “Permanently removing 8dot3 file names and not modifying registry keys that point to the 8dot3 file names may lead to unexpected application failures, including the inability to uninstall an application.” Its documentation describes fsutil 8dot3name scan for identifying registry references that may be affected and a test mode for evaluating stripping. Back up the relevant directory or volume before considering removal, and do not use forced stripping as a routine performance tweak. See Microsoft’s command reference for the scan and strip options.

8.3 settings do not enable long paths
Disabling short-name creation will not remove Windows’ path-length limits. Long-path support is a separate feature: Microsoft documents requirements that include setting LongPathsEnabled and an application manifest declaring longPathAware. The application must opt in; the setting does not automatically change the behavior of every program. Read Microsoft’s maximum path length documentation for the distinct requirements.
