It is a full desktop operating system with a familiar bottom taskbar, Linux applications, browser-based services, Windows collaboration features and reversible installation choices. The deciding factors are whether your essential programs, games and hardware work on Linux.
There is also a version issue: deepin’s official download page lists deepin 25.2.0 as the latest release and labels deepin 23.1 a “Legacy Release.” If you specifically need V23, confirm that its image and support remain available before installing.
What deepin V23 is and why the version matters
A mature but older branch
Deepin 23 was officially released on 15 August 2024, after three years of preparation, nine iterations and 51 internal tests. Its release notes report more than 8,000 upgraded core packages. That history explains why V23 is a substantial desktop release rather than an experimental Windows imitation.
However, the official download page now directs users toward deepin 25.2.0. A new installation should therefore begin with a decision about branch selection, not just a decision about Linux versus Windows. If you choose V23 for a specific compatibility or workflow reason, check the available image, update path and support status immediately before writing the installer.

A Windows-familiar desktop without being Windows
The redesigned Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE) uses a bottom taskbar, a launcher with sorting and grouping, workspaces, quick-panel controls and a redesigned Control Center. Themes, icons and cursors are also configurable. Deepin says the redesign retains familiar habits while helping people coming from another operating system adapt.
Those similarities reduce the learning curve, but the applications, drivers, filesystem behavior and update system remain Linux-based. A familiar layout does not provide automatic compatibility with Windows software.
When it can replace Windows 11 successfully
Good candidates
- People whose work is mainly in a web browser or Linux-native applications.
- Users who can replace proprietary Windows-only tools with Linux editions or browser services.
- Households that want a Linux desktop while still sharing files, a clipboard and a cursor with Windows devices.
- Owners willing to test their exact laptop or desktop hardware before erasing Windows.
Reasons to keep Windows available
- A required business, engineering, education or creative application exists only for Windows.
- A game depends on Windows-specific technology or an anti-cheat system that has not been validated on your setup.
- Your printer, Wi-Fi adapter, graphics card, Bluetooth device or sleep behavior has not worked in a live test.
- You need a manufacturer utility, device firmware tool or peripheral feature that has no Linux support.
Deepin documents Windows collaboration features—not universal Windows application compatibility. Treat every essential Windows program or game as an individual compatibility question.

Software compatibility: make an inventory first
Before changing partitions, list everything you use weekly and classify it:

Do not rely on a generic “Linux-compatible” label. Verify the exact application version and device model, then test before selecting a full-disk installation.
Hardware support depends on the individual PC
Deepin publishes images for several processor architectures, but architecture support is only the first filter. The exact GPU, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chipsets, printer, touchpad, webcam, audio device and suspend/resume behavior still determine whether a particular PC is a good candidate.

Use live media as a hardware test
Deepin’s official download page provides live-system media. Boot it without installing and check the functions that would be expensive to lose:
- Display resolution, brightness controls and graphics acceleration.
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth and audio output.
- Keyboard, touchpad, webcam, microphone and external monitors.
- Printer discovery, printing and scanning if those are essential.
- Sleep, wake, battery reporting and external storage.
A live session is evidence about that particular machine, not a guarantee for every future update or peripheral. If a critical component fails there, do not erase Windows until you have a documented fix.

Full-disk replacement
Deepin describes this as the simplest option for a computer dedicated to Deepin. Before selecting it, copy personal files to a separate backup, confirm that every essential workflow has a Linux or web replacement, and make sure you can reinstall any software you still need.

Custom dual boot
Deepin’s custom installation path explicitly supports installing Windows and Deepin as a dual system. This is the lower-risk evaluation route when one or more Windows-only tools remain essential. Keep a current backup anyway: dual boot reduces the cost of changing your mind, but it does not make partitioning risk-free.
Live evaluation
Use the live image to test booting, networking, graphics, input and peripherals before touching the internal disk. It is particularly valuable for laptops with unusual Wi-Fi or graphics hardware.

A fresh installation requires a system installation USB drive. Deepin recommends using Ventoy to create the bootable media. The official guidance does not specify a required capacity, brand or transfer speed, so those are purchasing choices rather than Deepin requirements.

- Obtain the correct Deepin image for your PC’s architecture and confirm its availability from the official download page.
- Use a reliable USB flash drive and create the installer with Ventoy, following Ventoy’s current instructions.
- Boot the PC from that USB drive and select the live environment when you want to test hardware first.
- Only after the tests succeed, start the installer and choose either the custom dual-boot path or the full-disk path.
Creating installation media does not back up your Windows files. Keep the backup on a different device before repartitioning or replacing the disk.
Updates, rollback and personal-data protection
Deepin 23 introduces atomic updates with backup and restore points, rollback and version switching. Its Linyaps application packaging isolates application dependencies from the base system. These features can reduce the damage from a failed system update or a dependency conflict.
They are not a substitute for a personal backup. A rollback can restore the operating-system state; it does not recreate documents deleted during partitioning or a full-disk installation. Maintain an independent copy of irreplaceable files and record any credentials, encryption keys or application settings you will need after migration.
A practical decision checklist
Choose Deepin as a full Windows replacement only when all of these statements are true:
- Your essential applications are Linux-native or browser-based, or you have verified alternatives.
- Your critical games and peripherals have been tested on the exact PC.
- You have selected the correct architecture and confirmed that the intended V23 image is still available and supported.
- You have a separate backup of personal files.
- You understand whether you are using a live trial, dual boot or a disk-erasing installation.
If any statement is false, start with the live image or a custom dual boot. That preserves a practical path back to Windows while you resolve the specific compatibility issue instead of discovering it after the disk has been erased.
