A 2011 research report described cloth that could signal oxygen concentration through light captured by a digital camera. It was an experimental sensing concept—not a proven safety garment, certified monitor, or product shown to be available for purchase.
How did the oxygen-sensitive cloth work?
Researchers coated cotton thread with oxygen-sensitive polystyrene microparticles, then embroidered the thread into fabric. The particles contained two dyes: a blue reference dye and a red dye whose emission responded to oxygen.
When illuminated with ultraviolet light, the dyes emitted visible light. The blue signal was described as stable across oxygen concentrations, while the red emission decreased as oxygen concentration increased. A digital camera recorded the blue and red channel signals, providing the readout. In other words, the reported concept relied on optical dyes, UV excitation, and camera-based measurement—not on ordinary fabric changing color by itself.
Was it a working safety garment?
The report described a research prototype and proposed possible uses; it did not establish field deployment, safety certification, or commercial availability. Peter Douglas, an oxygen-sensor expert at Swansea University, said: “It is not immediately obvious where it would be used in practice, but now it is available, perhaps real practical applications will follow.” His comment reflects the uncertainty around practical use, not evidence that the cloth had become a dependable safety monitor.

The report named miners, high-altitude adventurers, and space explorers as potential users. Those were suggested applications, not demonstrated deployments. No supported performance figures establish the cloth’s sensitivity, response time, accuracy, detection thresholds, or safety performance, so it should not be treated as a substitute for established oxygen-monitoring equipment.
How is this different from newer chameleon-inspired fabric?
A 2025 paper describes a chameleon-inspired structural-color textile for monitoring human motion through responses to mechanical strain. That is a different sensing purpose and mechanism from the 2011 oxygen-sensitive dye cloth; it is not evidence of oxygen detection or commercialization. See the PubMed record.

The original report attributed the idea to Xi Chen of Xiamen University, who said: “When I saw on television that coal miners were trapped in mines and died because of a lack of oxygen, I felt sad and tried to figure out a simple method to detect oxygen.” The report and its description of the prototype are available from Chemistry World.
