ChatGPT Astra can help create and refine editable 3D scenes, but the documented example is architectural visualization—not proof of a production-ready mechanical CAD design. OpenAI’s September 2026 walkthrough shows Astra working through Codex to build a Blender house scene, then transferring an earlier version into Unreal Engine 5. The “cat-approved” part is playful: the project documents no cat test or approval.
What Astra’s documented 3D workflow actually demonstrates
In a September 4, 2026 developer post, OpenAI author Thomas Ricouard describes asking Astra in Codex to turn a short house brief into an editable Blender scene. “I asked Astra in Codex to turn that brief into an editable 3D scene in Blender.”
He then iterated on the house, furniture, materials, and lighting, and created a camera tour. An earlier version was also explored in Unreal Engine 5. For that transfer, Astra wrote an export-and-import pipeline around the approved Blender file: evaluated geometry was exported as FBX, alongside a JSON scene description containing component placement, materials, lights, and cameras. OpenAI’s architectural visualization walkthrough documents this as an editable visualization workflow.
That is useful evidence of AI-assisted scene creation and iteration. It is not evidence that Astra independently designed or verified a mechanical part, or that the resulting scene meets engineering or manufacturing requirements.

Can ChatGPT Astra create CAD?
It depends on what you mean by “CAD.” If you mean creating editable 3D geometry and a visual scene that can be refined in a 3D application, the documented Blender project is a concrete example. If you mean a mechanically defined part ready to manufacture, with validated dimensions, tolerances, materials, loads, and safety, the example does not establish that.
OpenAI reports a 95.9% result for GPT-6 Astra on BenchCAD in 2026, compared with 83.3% for GPT-5.6 Sol. These are company-reported benchmark scores, not the probability that a particular design generated for you will be correct. The reported results do not certify that an individual object is manufacturable, structurally adequate, safe, or within tolerance. OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra page provides the benchmark context.

The available descriptions do not show Astra validating the showcased work against engineering standards, manufacturing constraints, loads, tolerances, or safety requirements. Treat generated geometry and scripts as drafts, and get appropriate human or engineering review before relying on them for fabrication or other real-world use.
How to adapt the example for your own 3D concept
The following is a practical adaptation of Ricouard’s documented process, not a tested universal recipe. It is best suited to visual exploration where you can inspect and refine the scene.

- Define the brief. State what you want to visualize, the main components, approximate proportions, intended style, and any constraints that matter. Separate visual preferences from dimensions that would need engineering verification.
- Ask for an editable scene. In Codex, describe the desired Blender scene and ask for editable geometry rather than only a rendered image. Include a clear list of components and the information you want preserved for later changes.
- Inspect the result in Blender. Check the scene’s geometry, object organization, materials, lighting, and camera views. Do not treat visual plausibility as confirmation that dimensions or construction details are correct.
- Refine one issue at a time. Give specific follow-up directions about the part of the scene that needs revision—for example, a component’s shape, placement, material, or lighting—then inspect each change.
- Transfer it only if another environment helps. The official example used an export/import pipeline to explore an earlier Blender version in Unreal Engine 5. A similar transfer may require preserving both geometry and scene information; the post does not establish a universal export recipe for other projects.
What a digital model does not prove
A model can look finished while important physical questions remain unanswered. Neither an editable scene nor a successful transfer to another 3D environment demonstrates that an object can be built as shown, remains stable under real loads, or satisfies a relevant safety standard.
A separate example illustrates the distinction: Tom’s Hardware reported on October 4, 2026, that LDraw Nova uses language models, including Astra, to generate LEGO CAD files. The showcased models had not been physically built, and the project lacked physics modeling for stability. That report concerns a different project; it does not validate the OpenAI architectural scene or establish how any particular design will perform. Tom’s Hardware’s report on LDraw Nova describes that limitation.

Access and setup depend on your account
OpenAI’s Help Center says Plus plans include Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Availability elsewhere, workspace permissions, and rollout can vary, while usage draws on Work and Codex allowances. The page also notes that use may be faster than GPT-5.6 Sol depending on task size, reasoning level, and speed setting. These details can change, so check the current ChatGPT Work and Codex Help Center page for your account’s access and allowance information.
