Sometimes—but there is no universal opt-out that guarantees every AI developer will honor an artist’s preference. A platform setting, an embedded file preference, or a website crawler rule can apply within a defined scope; legal protections vary by country. None of these measures should be assumed to undo training or collection that already happened.
What an opt-out can—and cannot—do
“Opt out” can mean several different things: asking a platform not to include a post in training datasets, attaching a preference to a file, or limiting crawlers on a website the artist controls. These signals are not interchangeable, and their effect depends on which platform, service, or developer recognizes them.
It is also important to distinguish model training from other uses. A preference about training does not necessarily block a service from using an image as a reference, retrieving it, or processing it in another way. Check the stated scope of each control.

| Option | Where it applies | What it can do | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| DeviantArt NoAI label | Works posted on DeviantArt | Signals that a work is not authorized for third-party AI training datasets; creators can set it on individual submissions, selected works, or a gallery. | It is a platform-provided rights signal, not proof that every third party will comply. (DeviantArt Help Center) |
| Adobe Content Credentials preference | Files carrying the credential | Embeds a preference requesting that generative AI models not train on or use the content. Adobe currently lists Firefly and Spawning as supporting it. | Requires a verified name or connected social account. Enabling it prevents uploading the file to Adobe Stock and restricts some Firefly reference or similar-image features. (Adobe Support) |
| Website crawler controls | A website the artist controls | Can manage some crawler access to material on that site. | Does not control copies hosted elsewhere, and some crawlers may not follow common practices. (UK government report) |
| Glaze or Nightshade | Artwork processed with the tools | May disrupt style extraction or alter training signals. | These tools are not guaranteed technical or legal shields; developers may not use or comply with them. (UK government impact assessment, 2026) |
How to make an opt-out request more useful
- Start where the work is posted. Check the platform’s current controls for AI training or third-party datasets. On DeviantArt, the NoAI label can be applied to an individual submission, multiple deviations through Studio or a gallery, or an entire gallery. Save a record of the setting and when you applied it.
- Consider a file-level preference for work that travels. Adobe says its Content Credentials preference is currently recognized by Firefly and Spawning. Check the destination service’s own policy rather than assuming that every recipient reads or honors the credential.
- If you control your website, review crawler access. Use the site’s access controls and the crawler documentation relevant to the services you want to address. This can affect some future access to that site; it cannot establish that an image was never collected from another location.
- Use image-protection tools as an additional layer, if appropriate. Glaze and Nightshade may introduce technical friction, but neither ensures that a work cannot be used. Consider their limitations alongside platform controls and any applicable legal rights.
- Keep records for a specific dispute. Preserve the original work, ownership and license information, copies of relevant notices, and records of the settings or requests you made. For a claim involving a particular work, country, or license, consult a qualified copyright professional.
What the law says depends on where you are
United Kingdom
A UK government report says developers commonly use online content, disclosure about training sources is often limited, and there is currently no general UK legal requirement for developers to publicly disclose which copyright works they used or how they obtained them. The report also says that platforms may offer opt-outs, but using them is not always straightforward.

European Union
The UK report describes the EU AI Act as requiring providers of general-purpose AI models to publish sufficiently detailed summaries of training material. Those summaries need not identify every work one by one, although the report says they should be generally comprehensive and useful for rights enforcement. This is a transparency requirement, not a universal per-work opt-out list.
United States
The U.S. Copyright Office is analyzing copyright issues raised by AI, including the use of copyrighted material in training. Its overview says Part 3 was released in pre-publication form on May 9, 2025, with a final version still to come. That overview does not establish a general opt-out rule for artists.

These summaries do not decide whether a particular use infringes copyright, falls within a legal exception, or violates a license. The answer can depend on the work, its rights holder, the use, and the jurisdiction.
How to interpret claims from AI providers
Adobe states: “We do not and have never trained Adobe Firefly on customer content.” That is Adobe’s statement about Firefly; it should not be read as an independently verified finding about every AI provider or every use of customer content.
Rank #3
Likewise, a platform label, file credential, or crawler setting is evidence of a preference or access rule—not proof that every outside party received it or followed it. The UK government impact assessment says enforcement can be difficult and costly for individual right holders. It also cites an estimate that 79% of the top news sites deploy some form of protection against AI scraping, while noting estimates vary. That figure concerns news websites, not artist portfolios, and should not be generalized to creators’ sites.
