Citizen Lab and Apple said it blocked the BLASTPASS Pegasus exploit, and Citizen Lab reported no successful PWNYOURHOME compromise on a device with the mode enabled. Those are meaningful, specific findings—not proof that every attack is stopped.
For people at credible risk of highly targeted attacks, Lockdown Mode is a useful extra layer. A threat notification is a serious indication of targeting, but it does not by itself confirm infection; forensic analysis is needed to establish compromise.
What Lockdown Mode has stopped in documented cases
The public evidence shows protection against particular attack techniques, rather than a blanket defense against spyware. The findings below come from investigations of specific campaigns and should be read within those limits.
| Case | What researchers reported | What the finding establishes |
|---|---|---|
| BLASTPASS, September 2023 | Citizen Lab described a zero-click Pegasus exploit chain that could compromise iPhones running iOS 16.6 without victim interaction. It involved malicious PassKit image attachments sent through iMessage. Apple issued fixes for the associated vulnerabilities. Citizen Lab said its researchers and Apple’s Security Engineering and Architecture team believed Lockdown Mode blocked this attack. | Lockdown Mode disrupted a documented exploit path. It does not establish protection against other exploit chains or later adaptations. |
| PWNYOURHOME, reported April 2023 | Citizen Lab described this NSO Group customer exploit chain as using HomeKit and iMessage. For a brief period, Lockdown Mode users received real-time warnings. Citizen Lab had seen no successful PWNYOURHOME compromise on a device with the mode enabled, while cautioning that the operator might have changed behavior to avoid triggering a warning. | The observation is limited to the campaign and devices researchers could examine. It is not proof that the spyware could never compromise a protected device. |
Citizen Lab’s April 2023 report described at least three iOS 15 and iOS 16 zero-click exploit chains deployed by NSO Group customers in 2022, including PWNYOURHOME and FINDMYPWN, which involved Find My and iMessage. The report also noted that it had seen no exploitation of iOS 16.1 and later in that context. That is a dated observation about those investigations, not a current guarantee about every iOS version or spyware campaign.

What Apple’s current statement does—and does not—say
On March 27, 2026, TechCrunch reported Apple spokesperson Sarah O’Rourke as saying: “We are not aware of any successful mercenary spyware attacks against a Lockdown Mode-enabled Apple device.” TechCrunch also reported that Amnesty International’s Security Lab had not seen evidence of a successful compromise while the mode was enabled, and that Citizen Lab had publicly described at least two instances in which the mode actively blocked spyware attacks.
“Not aware of” describes Apple’s state of knowledge; it is not independent proof that no protected Apple device has ever been compromised. Findings from Amnesty and Citizen Lab are likewise bounded by the cases available to investigate. Attackers can change techniques, and Apple does not disclose the criteria that trigger threat notifications because that information could help spyware operators evade detection.

Apple characterizes its threat notifications as high-confidence alerts that a person was individually targeted, while acknowledging that investigations cannot achieve absolute certainty. A notification therefore signals serious risk, not a forensic finding that the attack succeeded.
Who should consider turning it on
Apple describes Lockdown Mode as specialized protection for the small number of people who may be singled out for sophisticated mercenary-spyware attacks; the company says the vast majority of users will never be targeted by such spyware. It identifies journalists, activists, politicians, diplomats and human-rights defenders among groups often targeted. Apple also says someone who has not received a notification but has good reason to believe they may be individually targeted can enable the mode for additional protection.

The practical decision is whether the credible risk of targeted attack justifies using a deliberately hardened mode instead of the usual device experience. The evidence here supports that trade-off at a high level, but does not establish a complete, current inventory of every usability restriction. Avoid assuming either that everyone needs it or that ordinary security measures are enough for someone facing a credible targeted threat.
What to do if Apple sends a threat notification
- Check that the alert is genuine. Apple says its genuine threat notifications do not ask you to click links, open files, install apps or profiles, or provide a password or verification code. Sign in to account.apple.com directly to check for a notification on your account.
- Get specialist help. Apple strongly recommends expert assistance and names Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline as an example. Citizen Lab also directs people who believe they are being targeted to specialist support. Avoid relying on a consumer cleanup tool or trying drastic steps without trusted guidance.
- Update your device software. Apple recommends using current software. Updates can address vulnerabilities, but they do not prove that an earlier attempt did not occur or that all future attacks are blocked.
- Consider Lockdown Mode with an expert. Apple recommends the mode as an additional protective measure for people at elevated risk. Decide whether to enable it in light of your situation and the restrictions it imposes.
- Separate targeting from confirmed compromise. An alert alone does not establish infection. Amnesty International says forensic analysis is needed to confirm compromise.
Why the answer is not simply “yes” or “no”
Lockdown Mode has blocked documented spyware attack paths, making it a meaningful safeguard for people who may face sophisticated, individualized attacks. But the examples are attack-specific; threat actors evolve; and Apple’s notification criteria are not public. Treat the mode as risk reduction—not a cure for spyware, a substitute for software updates and sound account security, or a guarantee against every attack.
