There is no single rule for who may wear a bindi, sindoor, or maang tikka. They are different items with different associations: a bindi may be religious, cultural, marital, or decorative; sindoor is red powder placed in the hair parting and is associated with married status in Hindu contexts; and a maang tikka is jewellery commonly worn for ceremonial or bridal occasions. Meaning varies by region, community, family, and individual, so context matters more than a blanket yes or no.
How a bindi, sindoor, and maang tikka differ
| Item | What it is and where it is worn | Commonly documented context |
|---|---|---|
| Bindi | A mark, sticker, powder, or jewellery worn on the forehead. | Can be religious, cultural, marital, or decorative; usage and designs vary. |
| Sindoor | Red powder applied in the hair parting. | Associated with married status in Hindu contexts. |
| Maang tikka | Head jewellery worn across the head, with a pendant resting on the forehead. | Documented in ceremonial and special-occasion styling, including weddings. |
Bindi: a mark with varied meanings
The National Portal of India describes the Ballia bindi, also called tikuli, as an ornamental handicraft with cultural significance. It notes that designs, colours, and shapes vary and that a bindi can be applied to the forehead as a beauty mark (National Portal of India). The Pitt Rivers Museum describes bindis as marks made with powder, stickers, or jewellery. It notes that a bindi was historically one of several ways a married woman could indicate status, but that married and unmarried women also wear bindis as decoration today (Pitt Rivers Museum).
Sindoor: powder associated with marital status
The Pitt Rivers Museum describes sindoor as red powder smeared in the hair parting and includes it among symbols historically associated with married status (Pitt Rivers Museum). A peer-reviewed article on sindoor describes a prominent Hindu association with a married woman’s chastity, love, and fidelity, while examining how the expectation intersects with gender and appropriation debates (South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies). This is an important association, not a rule followed identically by every Hindu woman.

Maang tikka: jewellery for ceremony and special occasions
Hackney Museum describes a tikka from an Indian wedding jewellery set as worn across the head so it hangs over the forehead, traditionally for ceremonial or special occasions (Hackney Museum). A forehead ornament should not be treated as proof of a wearer’s religion or marital status. Wedding dress and adornment differ by community: for example, Singapore’s National Heritage Board documents Tamil-Hindu wedding practices that include bridal jewellery and a red pottu, and identifies the thali as a significant marriage symbol (National Heritage Board, Singapore).

Can someone outside a community wear these items?
The available evidence does not establish a universal etiquette rule or show that everyone in a community agrees. For bindis, survey data demonstrates that use in India is not limited to one religious identity. In Pew Research Center’s 2021 survey, 84% of Hindu women and 78% of Buddhist women said they generally wore a bindi; so did 18% of Muslim women, 22% of Christian women, and 29% of Sikh women. These are self-reported findings about women in India, not a ruling on who should wear a bindi in every setting (Pew Research Center).
The same survey found regional variation: 59% of Hindu women in Northeast India said they wore a bindi, compared with 84% of Hindu women nationally. Pew did not have enough Jain women in its sample to analyze them separately. These figures describe reported practice, not approval of outsiders wearing bindis.

For sindoor, its association with married status makes it especially inappropriate to treat as generic face paint or costume styling. A maang tikka is jewellery, but its ceremonial and regional contexts still deserve consideration. With any of the three, avoid assuming that one person’s response represents all South Asian people or communities.

- Identify the item accurately. A forehead bindi, powder in the hair parting, and head jewellery are not interchangeable accessories.
- Consider what it may communicate. In particular, do not apply sindoor to yourself or someone else as generic decoration.
- Ask the hosts when attending an event. For a wedding or cultural occasion, follow the dress guidance and ask privately if you are unsure whether a particular item is welcome.
- Avoid costume or caricature. Do not use sacred or culturally meaningful symbols as props, or claim that wearing an accessory makes someone “Indian” or “Hindu.”
- Listen without generalizing. People’s personal choices and views differ; take guidance from people connected to the event without appointing one person as the authority for everyone.
What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
The museum and heritage descriptions document forms, uses, and contexts; the Pew figures report bindi use among women in India in 2021. None supplies a universal origin story, a single scriptural rule, or a definitive etiquette standard for all three items and all South Asian communities. The practical answer is therefore contextual: learn what the specific item signifies, consider the occasion, and ask the relevant hosts when it matters.
