Possibly—but the word “old” is not enough to tell. A desktop can run a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube Live stream if it can play the video, encode the chosen output reliably, and maintain a stable internet and power connection. Test the actual computer and connection at your intended settings before depending on them for a continuous broadcast. YouTube does not publish a universal minimum PC specification for this workload.
What determines whether your desktop can handle it?
The demanding part is not simply keeping a video open. The computer must play the source and encode it into a live stream continuously, while the internet connection carries that stream to YouTube. A system may manage a short test but fail later because of heat, instability, a connection interruption, or power loss.
- Playback and encoding: The desktop must handle the source media and the selected resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings without falling behind.
- Upload stability: Sustained upload capacity matters more than a single speed-test result. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health.
- Power and local reliability: Because the stream is hosted on your computer, a power cut, reboot, or local equipment failure can interrupt it.
No particular processor, graphics card, memory amount, or operating system can be certified from the information in the question. Test your own desktop under the settings you plan to use.
Choose settings the computer and connection can sustain
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists the following recommended H.264 video bitrates. These are encoder recommendations, not minimum broadband-plan speeds or guarantees that a particular computer can encode successfully.

Start with the lowest resolution that meets your viewers’ needs. Run a representative test using the same video movement and audio you expect in the real stream; static footage may not reveal the same encoding or upload demands as more active scenes. YouTube documents RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. These are YouTube’s supported settings, not a guarantee that an older computer supports every codec. Choose an encoder and codec your machine handles reliably; YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport.

Verify the channel can go live
Encoder-based streaming is a YouTube-supported way to broadcast, but the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. The stream must also comply with YouTube’s live-streaming requirements, Community Guidelines, and Terms of Service.
Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. A prerecorded loop is not automatically exempt from copyright or other YouTube rules. Whether a particular loop qualifies for monetization is not established here, so check YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content rather than assuming that continuous playback will be eligible.

Test before relying on a 24/7 broadcast
- Check eligibility and prepare the stream in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule the live stream and use its stream key in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Select a resolution and frame rate your desktop can sustain, set the codec and bitrate, use constant bitrate, and set a two-second keyframe interval where available. Use RTMPS if the encoder offers it.
- Run a representative test. Play the intended media and audio at the planned output settings. YouTube recommends a pre-stream test and ongoing stream-health monitoring.
- Watch the encoder and YouTube health indicators. In OBS, monitor the connection indicator and dropped-frame counter. OBS says rising dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate.
- Test for long enough to expose problems. A short successful stream does not prove the machine, internet, or power will remain reliable for days. Observe performance over an extended representative run before scheduling an always-on broadcast.
A wired Ethernet connection from the desktop to the router can remove the local Wi-Fi link as one possible source of instability, but it cannot resolve an ISP outage or congestion by itself. A desktop UPS is an optional aid during some power interruptions; choose runtime for the actual load and do not treat it as a guarantee against every interruption.
Troubleshooting common failures
- Dropped frames keep increasing: Check OBS’s connection indicator and reduce the bitrate or output quality if the connection cannot sustain the current setting. If the problem persists, investigate the router, ISP connection, and local network; a speed test alone cannot rule out intermittent instability.
- The stream starts but the video stutters or the encoder falls behind: Lower the resolution or frame rate and test again. Confirm the computer can play the source while encoding at the selected settings. The exact limit depends on the desktop and codec, so there is no universal specification to apply.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm that the channel is verified, has no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days, and that the encoder is using the current stream key and a supported configuration.
- The stream stops after a power or network interruption: A locally hosted stream depends on the desktop, router, ISP, and power remaining available. Restore the failed connection or restart the encoder as needed; an Ethernet cable or UPS can address only some local failure modes, not every outage.
- You expect the full live broadcast to remain available as a video: Do not assume a very long 24/7 stream will be archived in full. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents stream status and health data and conversion of a completed broadcast into a YouTube video, but that does not establish a universal archive duration for an uninterrupted continuous loop.
What is different about running it in India?
The same encoder and YouTube requirements apply, but sustained upload performance, power reliability, and provider behavior depend on your actual location and service. The guidance here establishes no India-specific upload threshold or guarantee of uninterrupted service. Test from the home or studio where the desktop will run, and ask your local internet provider about sustained upload performance and outages. UPI availability is relevant if you choose a service that accepts it; it does not change the technical requirements for a desktop stream.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a desktop and home connection to carry the stream continuously, StreamNeo runs prerecorded YouTube streams from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI and cards are accepted. To try it, start a StreamNeo free day.
