Yes—an old Android phone can provide basic remote camera viewing, but it is not a feature-for-feature replacement for Ring. A documented setup uses the old phone as the camera and a second device as the viewer. If you cancel Ring, you can still watch live video and respond to alerts as they happen, but you need a compatible plan to review recorded video. Download any Ring footage you want to keep before your plan ends.
What an old phone can—and cannot—replace
A phone-camera app can turn a spare Android device into a remotely viewed camera. In AlfredCamera’s documented arrangement, one network-connected device runs as the camera and another runs as the viewer. That can suit basic monitoring from a fixed position, but the available documentation does not establish equivalent coverage, image quality, uptime, or deterrence compared with Ring.
It also does not make a phone an outdoor-rated camera, doorbell, continuous recorder, or professional monitoring service. Whether it is adequate depends on where you need coverage and how much you rely on it.

How to turn an old Android phone into a camera
AlfredCamera’s setup guidance describes pairing two devices, testing the video feed and connection, then mounting the camera phone. It lists Android 5.0 or later for the camera and Android 7.0 or later for the viewer. Its device-support guidance also makes app availability on the specific phone the practical compatibility check.

- Install the app on both devices. Sign in, choose the option to add a camera, and follow the app’s pairing instructions to link the camera phone with the viewer.
- Test before fixing the phone in place. Open the live feed on the viewer. Check that the video loads and that the camera’s network connection is strong enough at the intended location.
- Choose a stable position. Once the feed and connection work where you plan to use the phone, mount it. An adjustable smartphone clamp or stand can help with positioning; it is a placement aid, not a security or weatherproofing upgrade.
- Plan power for the specific phone. If it will remain in one location, decide whether it needs a compatible charger and cable. The setup guidance does not specify a universal charging arrangement, so check what suits the device and placement.
Permissions and privacy to check
AlfredCamera documents these Android permissions for its stated functions:
- Camera and microphone: for video and audio.
- Media or photo access: for saving videos.
- Display over other apps: on Android 10 and later, to help the app run without interruption.
Review each request and enable only the functions you intend to use. AlfredCamera says its live communication streams use 256-bit AES encryption. That is the company’s claim; it is not an independent audit and does not establish the protection applied to every storage, account, or notification path.

What changes when you cancel Ring
Ring says a compatible subscription is required to review recorded camera and doorbell video. Without a plan, live viewing and responding to alerts as they happen remain available. Under compatible plans, Ring motion-event recordings can be retained for up to 180 days.

Decide based on the coverage you actually need
- A phone may be enough if you want basic viewing from a fixed indoor position and can keep both devices connected.
- Keep Ring or choose another purpose-built option if you depend on reviewing recorded events, need a doorbell or outdoor-rated camera, or require coverage and reliability that the phone setup documentation does not establish.
- Compare the real costs and limits. A spare phone avoids buying another camera, but the app’s current paid-feature boundaries are not established here. Do not assume the setup is completely free or that it replaces every Ring service.
